Death toll rises to 46 in Bajaur blast
At least 46 people were killed and nearly 200 wounded after a suicide bomber targeted a public gathering of Jamiat-e-Ulema Islam-F in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Bajaur district, a senior government official said.

The blast occurred on Sunday afternoon at Shandy Morr in the outskirts of Khar city which is the district headquarters of Bajaur.

Inspector General of Police in KP Akhtar Hayat Khan told a private new channel that the suicide bombing occurred during the speech of JUI-F Khar’s head Ziaullah Jan at the workers’ convention.

The IGP said that the police have found the remains of the suicide bomber, while further investigations were under way.

Forty people were killed in the blast while 115 were injured, out of which 65 are getting medical treatment at the DHQ Khar, Medical Officer of District Headquarters Hospital Bajaur Doctor Liaquat Ali said. He added that more than 30 were moved to Timargara.

The authorities were shifting over 20 critically injured to Peshawar Hospital, he added.

Earlier, KP’s health minister Riaz Anwar confirmed the death of 39 people and more than a hundred injured.

“I can confirm that in the hospital we have 39 dead bodies, with 123 wounded that includes 17 patients in a serious condition,” he told news agency.

Provincial governor Haji Ghulam Ali confirmed the death toll to the international news agency.

“A senior leader from the party was due to address the ceremony, but before his arrival a bomb explosion took place,” IG Akhtar Hayat told news agency.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s JUI-F party was holding a workers’ convention in preparation for the general election expected later this year and a large number of supporters had gathered.

KP’s Information Minister Barrister Feroz Jamal Shah Kakalkhel said in a statement that initial reports suggested around 35 people had been killed and around 200 wounded in the blast.

The death toll is constantly rising as some of the injured were rushed to hospitals in Peshawar and other cities.
