Roads in Pindi begin to open as TLP, govt reach agreement

Roads in Pindi begin to open as TLP, govt reach agreement
Life in the city began returning to normality on Sunday night when the City Traffic Police started removing containers, concrete blocks and barricades from Murree Road and its arteries after the government and the proscribed Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) reached an agreement.

The traffic police in a press statement said containers were being removed from roads that were blocked. The district administration of the twin cities on Tuesday had blocked Faizabad intersection while law enforcement agencies began sealing areas and roads with containers to prevent TLP protesters from entering the federal capital territory.

“All the containers from Murree Road are being removed with the help of heavy cranes and diversions from Saddar to adjoining roads are also being removed,” the statement said, adding the road from 9th Avenue signal is being opened to traffic on Stadium Road.

Not only residents of the city but also police personnel, who had been called from other districts for duty, had been facing problems due to the tense situation.

Police personnel deployed in different parts of the city, especially those declared sensitive, were directed to remain on the duty point for 12 hours a day. In some of these spots, they had no access to a place for sleeping or toilets besides not having any food or tea.

“Yes, a cup of tea was given to the police on Friday but we have no blanket or any other thing to cover us especially when it is cold at night,” a police official said.

Snapshots on social media showed a police squad stationed at the metro bus station lying on the ground whereas some could be seen sleeping on chairs and so on.

On the other hand, a spokesman for the district police disputed the claims of police officials that they were not given food or accommodation.

He said: “The police officials called for special duty are given paratha with egg (tortilla with fried egg) with a cup of tea in the morning, refreshment in the afternoon and rice (pulao) at night.”

The inspector general of police Punjab had already directed district police chiefs (DPOs) and city police officers (CPOs) to ensure that arrangements were made for safe accommodation, administration, food and welfare of the arriving force to assist the local police.

Although there was no protest or demonstration by TLP activists in Rawalpindi’s downtown areas over the last week, the residents, particularly those living in areas adjacent to Murree Road, had been experiencing problems as a result of blocked roads.

Motorcycle riders, on the other hand, amassed a sizable fortune by carrying passengers when no other vehicle was capable of doing so due to the road closures.

After sunset on Sunday, people stuck in different areas were able to move ahead as containers were removed from roads.

Meanwhile, shortage of food and edibles in main markets of the garrison city has been reported due to the road blockades.

Rawalpindi Merchant Association President Saleem Pervaiz told Dawn that the supply of grains from central and southern Punjab was stopped due to the closure of Grand Trunk Road. He said traders had informed the district administration about this, adding, however, the supply would be improved as roads were opening.

On the other hand, people could not visit bazaars and markets in downtown area and Saddar, the main commercial hub of the cantonment, due to closure of main roads.

Mohammad Anwar, resident of Tipu Road said he could not do weekly shopping from Raja Bazaar.

Ahmed Saleem, a resident of Arya Mohallah, said his motorcycle developed a fault but there was no workshop open on Murree Road. He said prices of edibles increased manifold as shopkeepers charged more while making excuses about road closures.

Train services between Rawalpindi, Lahore and Karachi remained suspended for the last five days, however, they will open on Monday.

A senior official of Pakistan Railways said that they were trying to run the trains, adding the government’s directives in this regard were awaited.

Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Ali told Dawn that roads will be open by Monday morning. He said the roads had been closed for security purposes to avoid any tension in the garrison city.

Pakistan and Saudi Arabia had historically enjoyed long-standing fraternal ties, rooted deep in common faith," Prime Minister Imran Khan said in a conversation with Saudi Arabia’s Al-Riyadh newspaper published Sunday. The premier said that owing to their complementarities in the socio-economic fundamentals, Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 provided opportunities to Pakistan to engage with the Kingdom in realizing Naya Pakistan’s ambitious plan. “I must say that there are significant complementarities in the socio-economic fundamentals of the “Naya Pakistan” and the Saudi Vision 2030. Both emphasised economic opportunity and diversity, domestic growth,…

Taliban regime urged international donors for full support

Taliban
Afghanistan's new Taliban regime urged international donors to resume full support for green projects in the country on Sunday, marking the start of the COP26 summit. The movement seized power in Afghanistan in August after overthrowing the former US-backed regime, but has not yet been recognised by the international community. As such, the new Islamic Emirate will not be represented in Glasgow when world leaders gather on Sunday to renew plans to tackle the global climate crisis. But senior Taliban leader Suhail Shaheen said that climate programmes in Afghanistan that…

pm imran khan
Prime Minister Imran Khan has thanked Saudi Arabia for its $3 billion financial support to Pakistan announced earlier this week, saying "the budgetary support will help the balance of payment of Pakistan in the backdrop of rising commodity prices globally." Saudi Arabia had agreed to revive its financial support to Pakistan, including about $3 billion in safe deposits and $1.2bn to $1.5bn worth of oil supplies on deferred payments; an agreement to this effect was reached during the premier's three-day visit to the kingdom earlier this week, “I am extremely…

PDM all set to protest inflation in DG Khan rally today

PDM chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman
Opposition alliance Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) is all set to hold a rally in Dera Ghazi Khan today (Sunday), with a focus on protesting the rising inflation in the country.

PDM chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif and other opposition leaders will address the rally.

Senior PML-N leader Rana Sanaullah has said that the government has failed and that it has made it difficult for the poor and middle class to live.

Sanaullah said that inflation is likely to increase even more in the coming days.

On October 22, the opposition alliance had kicked off its protest drives against the recent price hikes in the country. Protest rallies were held in major cities like Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar and others.

Ahead of the anti-government alliance's DG Khan rally, PML-N spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb said it will be a "public referendum against the tyrannical government".

In her statement, Aurangzeb said that the people of Pakistan have understood that "getting rid of Imran sahib is the only way to get rid of inflation".

Preparations for the opposition alliance's DG Khan rally have been completed, she confirmed, sharing that the rally will focus on the "historic" inflation, unemployment and economic catastrophe in Pakistan.

The PML-N spokesperson confirmed that opposition leader Shehbaz Sharif and other PDM leaders will address the rally.

'Agreement reached': Govt team alongside TLP leaders address press conference following negotiations

Govt team alongside TLP leaders address press conference following negotiations
Government officials and Mufti Muneebur Rehman are currently addressing a press conference in Islamabad on negotiations with the proscribed Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP).

Mufti Muneeb, the first to speak from the line-up also featuring TLP members Mufti Ghulam Abbas Faizi and Mufti Mohammad Ameer, announced that negotiations between the government and TLP have been "successful".

"The agreement was reached after sense prevailed over aggression. Rationality prevailed over sentiments, and all the participants demonstrated patience," he said.

"I want to urge the entire nation that this is not the victory of any individual, but it is the victory of Islam, patriotism, and protection of human lives.

"I want to tell the nation that these dialogues were never not held under any duress. They were held in a serious, responsible and independent environment, [in which] everyone made their contribution. Everyone deserves to be thanked for it."

According to a handout by the Press Information Department (PID), Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser and MNA Ali Mohammad Khan were to originally address the press conference alongside Mufti Muneeb at 11:15am.

However, the press conference was delayed, with foreign minister telling reporters at the PID that it would be held "shortly". The PID later announced that the press conference would be held at 3:15pm before revising the timing again to 2:45pm.

A day earlier, a new negotiating team — led Qureshi and comprising Qaiser and Khan — met TLP leaders while Prime Minister Imran Khan met with senior clerics at his Banigala residence.

A senior TLP leader said negotiations were the only way forward and everybody wanted a way out of the current situation, however, the behaviour of some cabinet members was irresponsible.

“Why did they brand us Indian agent; the whole nation wants to know who is getting money from the enemies,” the TLP official, speaking from hiding, said, adding that, “we have asked the government to change the negotiating team which does not insult us after the meeting”.

Meanwhile, the TLP acknowledged the meeting in a press statement, saying that a meeting with the government team was held in Rawalpindi. In its second release issued late in the night, the TLP agreed to abide by all assurances it had given the government, including stopping the march in Wazirabad.

The government had resumed talks with TLP, though this time the negotiating team primarily consisted of senior clerics from the Barelvi school of thought.

Despite taking all measures against the banned outfit’s protest march, the government decided to resume talks and brought senior leaders of the organisation, already in the custody, to the federal capital in the early hours of Saturday morning.

According to sources in the TLP, Mufti Muneeb also met the outfit’s incarcerated leader Saad Rizvi in Islamabad.

Following these renewed efforts, cabinet members also softened their tone, with Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry and Adviser to the Prime Minister on Religious Harmony and Middle East Hafiz Tahir Ashrafi restrained from issuing statements against the banned outfit.

Official sources said Saad Rizvi and three senior members of the TLP ‘Shura’ — Maulana Shafiq Amini, Engineer Hafezullah and Pir Inayatul Haq — were brought to Islamabad from Lahore for direct negotiations.

Negotiations between government and banned organisation successful

Negotiations between government and banned organisation successful
The negotiations between the government and the banned organisation have finally reached a positive conclusion. According to sources, the talks have been successful.

“Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, National Assembly speaker Asad Qaiser, and other leaders will reveal all the details at a press conference at 11:15am.

Initial reports suggest that the government’s top priority was to put an end to the protests.  banned organisation supporters at the GT Road near Gujranwala will head back home.

Other agreements reached in the talks will be revealed in the media briefing.

The development comes after Prime Minister Imran Khan made a key offer to banned organisation leaders during a meeting with ulemas Saturday as he sought their help in defusing the ongoing tensions between the two groups.

He said his government will not oppose the release of  banned organisation Chief Saad Rizvi if courts make a decision, but he would not issue an executive order in this regard.

The prime minister added that the concession was linked to  banned organisation activists ending their long march. He allowed the ulema to meet Saad Rizvi.

After the meeting with ulemas, a new negotiation team was formed. It is led by Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi and comprises National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser and MNA Ali Mohammad Khan.

Protesters waiting in Wazirabad

Meanwhile, thousand of  banned organisation supporters have been stationed near Wazirabad’s GT Road waiting for orders from their leaders. They have been told to wait until talks with the government are over.

Explosion near Yemen's Aden airport causes casualties

Explosion near Yemen's Aden airport
An explosion near the entrance to the international airport of Yemen's southern port city of Aden on Saturday resulted in casualties, witnesses and security sources told Reuters, but it was not clear whether the incident was an attack.

An airport official said a small truck blew up at an outer gate to the airport, while a local official and two security sources said the vehicle was carrying petroleum products.

The blast was strong and was heard across the city. Nearby residents' windows were smashed.

Aden is the temporary home of Yemen's internationally-recognised government.

But tensions have also for years simmered within Aden itself between the government and southern separatist groups.

The government and the Southern Transitional Council (STC) are nominal allies under the Saudi-led coalition.

Earlier this month a car bomb in Aden targeting a convoy carrying the city's governor - an STC member - killed at least six people and wounded others. The governor survived.

Instability in the south complicates United Nations-led peace efforts to end the war in Yemen, which has killed tens of thousands of people and left 80% of the population needing help.

No country has the right to comment on Iran’s defense power: Deputy FM

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Baqeri-Kani (R) speaks with Russia Today’s Arabic servicea
No country has the right to speak or comment on the Islamic Republic’s defense capabilities, says Iran’s deputy foreign minister, amid the imposition of a new round of US sanctions on Tehran targeting the country’s drone program.

“Iran’s defense capability is a matter of national decision that is intertwined with its national interests and security; therefore, no country has the right to speak or comment on this,” Ali Baqeri-Kani told the Newsmaker program of Russia Today’s Arabic service in an interview published on Friday.

Baqeri-Kani said the same is the case for other countries as well.

“Each country’s defense capability is [only] that country’s business, and each country acts in accordance with its national interests and within the framework of its capabilities to ensure its security and gain adequate deterrent power,” he said.

“No other country has the right to talk about the capabilities and the things (military equipment) that another country possesses to defend its national interests,” he stressed.

On Friday, the US Treasury Department targeted four individuals and two entities with fresh sanctions, saying they were involved in promoting the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) programs of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) and its Quds Force.

Tehran censured the “quite contradictory behavior” of the administration of Joe Biden, which comes in the midst of negotiations to compel Washington to abandon the [Donald] Trump administration’s “maximum pressure” campaign against Iran, sayngi the White House “is sending the message that is not trustworthy at all.”

Baqeri-Kani further said Iran’s military and defense doctrine is built on possessing merely conventional weapons, making a reference to a fatwa (religious decree) issued by Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei against the acquisition, development, and use of nuclear weapons.

Asked about Israel’s claim that Iran is on the verge of making nuclear weapons, the senior Iranian diplomat flatly rejected the allegation, which he said is not the first time the regime makes against the Islamic Republic to achieve its goals.

He reasoned that Israel is not qualified to speak about such issues since the regime itself possesses nuclear weapons in the volatile West Asian region.

“The accusations are completely false and baseless,” he asserted. “We emphasize that it is the Israelis who stand accused here, and therefore, they cannot level accusations and make complaints in this regard,” he added.

On a question whether Iran is able to respond to an Israeli attack, he said Israel does not even dare dream of attacking Iran.

“Even if it does, it won’t wake up from that dream,” he added.

During the interview, Baqeri-Kani also said Iran only pursues the objective of removing the unlawful and cruel US sanctions through the negotiations in the Austrian capital, Vienna.

“We would make practical progress in future negotiations only if a decision to remove those sanctions is finally accepted” by the other parties to the Vienna talks, he said.

He maintained that a strong will to remove the anti-Iran sanctions is needed on the other side of the negotiating table.

On Wednesday, Baqeri-Kani announced that the negotiations to remove Iran sanctions will resume before the end of November.

There has been mounting pressure on Tehran to return to the negotiating table in recent weeks.

Back in April, Iran and the remaining parties to the 2015 landmark nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), began negotiations to restore the agreement. The talks were paused in late June, after Iran’s presidential election.

“The main issue is not when the negotiations would take place, but rather, what the other side is offering in order to remove the sanctions,” the lead Iranian negotiator added.

Former US President Donald Trump left the JCPOA in May 2018 and re-imposed the anti-Iran sanctions that the deal had lifted.

He also placed additional sanctions on Iran under other pretexts not related to the nuclear case as part of his “maximum pressure” campaign.

NCOC starts rolling back COVID-19 restrictions from cities with 60% vaccination rate

NCOC meeting
The National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) has decided to roll back all COVID-19 related restrictions from cities where at least 60% of the population has gotten itself vaccinated against the disease, it emerged on Saturday.

The decision was made in an NCOC meeting headed by Federal Minister for Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives Asad Umar after reviewing progress in vaccination campaigns in various cities.

In its statement, the NCOC declared Islamabad, Mandi Bahauddin, Gilgit and Mirpur as “Best Cities” for achieving vaccination of 60% of their population.

Rawalpindi, Skardu, Hunza, Peshawar, Jhelum and other cities have been declared “vaccinated” as 40% to 60% of the population in the cities has gotten the coronavirus shot.

All virus-related curbs have been abolished from marriage ceremonies, social gatherings, businesses, indoor dining and sports activities in cities with a 60% vaccination rate. All public transport will be allowed to function with an occupancy level of 100% in these cities.

However, in the rest of the cites, prevailing COVID-19 restrictions on marriage ceremonies, gatherings and sports activities will remain in force, at least till November 15. Public transport will be allowed to function with a maximum occupancy level of 80% in these cities.

The decision will be reviewed on November 12.

Daily COVID-19 case count in Pakistan under 1,000 for two straight weeks

 COVID-19 case in Pakistan
Pakistan reported 733 more COVID-19 infections during the last 24 hours, pushing the nationwide tally of confirmed cases to 1,273,078, the National Command and Operation Centre’s (NCOC) data showed Sunday morning.

According to the NCOC's latest statistics, 733 people tested positive for the virus after 48,192 COVID-19 tests were taken across the country during the last 24 hours. This brings the positivity rate to 1.52%.

Meanwhile, the coronavirus claimed another 11 lives in Pakistan during the same period, taking the national death toll from the virus to 28,449. The number of active cases now stands at 23,094.

The country has reported a daily case count of less than 1,000 for the 14th consecutive day today (Sunday). Moreover, the country reported a positivity rate below 2% for the 14th straight day today as well.

Pakistan is reporting 628 new infections on average each day, 11% of the peak — the highest daily average reported on June 17.

Pakistan has administered at least 103,514,198 doses of COVID vaccines so far. Assuming every person needs 2 doses, that’s enough to have vaccinated about 23.9% of the country’s population.

During the last week reported, Pakistan averaged about 621,689 doses administered each day. At that rate, it will take a further 70 days to administer enough doses for another 10% of the population.

Three shot dead during nationwide protests against Sudan coup

Three shot dead during nationwide protests against Sudan coup
Military forces shot dead three people during nationwide protests in Sudan on Saturday, medics said, as tens of thousands of people demanded the restoration of a civilian-led government after a military coup.

Sudan’s Central Doctors Committee said the three protesters were killed by troops in the capital Khartoum’s twin city of Omdurman during the nationwide protests after a military coup.

But Sudanese police denied shooting the protesters, saying on state TV that one policeman sustained gunshot wounds.

People carried Sudanese flags and chanted “Military rule can’t be praised” and “This country is ours, and our government is civilian” as they marched in neighbourhoods across the capital.

The protesters have called for a return to a path to democracy and rejected military measures and demanded the release of detainees.

According to Sudan TV, Sudanese security forces closed the majority of main roads and bridges in Khartoum, with the exception of the Halfaya and Soba bridges.

People also took to the streets in cities in central, eastern, northern and western Sudan. Crowds swelled to the hundreds of thousands in Khartoum, said a Reuters witness.

“The people have delivered their message, that retreat is impossible and power belongs to the people,” said protester Haitham Mohamed.

“This has been a miscalculation from the start and misunderstanding of the level of commitment, bravery, and concern the street has about the future of Sudan,” said Jonas Horner of the International Crisis Group.

Civilian-appointed cabinet ministers supported the protests in a statement, and said the military “will not find free Sudanese or true democratic revolutionary forces to be their partners in power.”

In central Khartoum on Saturday there was a heavy military deployment of armed troops that included the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.

Tens of thousands of Sudanese this week protested General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan’s removal of Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok’s cabinet on Monday, in a military takeover that triggered a deadly crackdown against protesters and led Western states to freeze hundreds of millions of dollars in aid.

Ramzan Sugar Mills case: NAB court extends interim bail of Shehbaz, Hamza
President of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Shehbaz Sharif and his son Hamza Shahbaz on Saturday have appeared before Lahore’s accountability court in money laundering and Ramzan Sugar Mills cases.

During the proceedings, the court has extended the interim bail of PML-N leaders till November 20.

It’s been a year, National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has failed to prove corruption of even a single penny against us, said Shehbaz Sharif.

Earlier in August 2020, accountability court had indicted Shehbaz Sharif and his son Hamza Shahbaz in Ramzan Sugar Mills reference.

During the hearing headed by judge Amjad Nazir Chaudhry, both the accused pleaded not guilty in the reference and their lawyer requested time for case preparation which was rejected by the court.

NAB had claimed that a drain was constructed out of public money in Chiniot to facilitate the Ramzan Sugar Mills when Shehbaz Sharif, the co-accused in the case, was Punjab’s chief minister.
