5 ways to care for your hands every day

Like your face, your hands function as bridges to the world. You shake hands when you meet or greet someone for the first time and when you seal a deal. Your hands express your affection to those you love. They soothe sad children and those suffering from illness. Maybe you "talk" with yours. In any case, whenever you're interacting with others, your hands will probably spend some time in the spotlight. The problem is that your hands are also essential tools. You use them for complex maneuvers and lowly chores. And everyone is always telling you the importance of washing your hands. In the course of a day, your hands are exposed to all sorts of germs, dirt, harsh substances, sunlight and more. To make matters worse, the frequent washing that's designed to keep your hands sanitary also can keep them dry, cracked and wrinkled. If neglected, your hands' skin may end up needing medical help. That said, your fingernails (and your spirits) might benefit from a pro...

Or maybe it’s that your schedule is so chaotic that you often find yourself eating dinner at 10 p.m. And sure, you know it's not ideal, but is it actually harmful? Well, a recent study looked at the link between patterns of eating late and heart disease. “Meal timing regulates the biological clocks that are involved in several circadian functions like regulating blood pressure, metabolism and hormonal secretion,” says Bernard Srour, PharmD, PhD, MPH, professor of epidemiology, INRAE, Inserm, Sorbonne Paris Nord University, co-author of the study. “Former studies have found possible links between breakfast-skipping and less favorable metabolic health. But not much is known on the link between meal timing and cardiovascular diseases.” Researchers looked at the habits of more than 103,000 adults to assess whether the times they ate food could have a link with the risk of cardiovascular disease — beyo...

Consuming a daily glass or more of 100% fruit juice is linked to a minor weight gain in both children and adults, according to a recent analysis of prior studies. As per a study published in an international media outlet, Dr Walter Willett, a renowned nutrition researcher, highlighted a key concern with juice it's potential for overconsumption due to concentrated fruit content, raising the risk of increased calorie intake and elevated blood glucose levels. Can acupuncture help prevent anxiety?

It may not seem like self-care to have several needles pierce your skin while you're under stress, nonetheless, acupuncture has been used for thousands of years in traditional Chinese medicine to treat a variety of illnesses and relieve pain. Acupuncture needles are inserted into the inner wrists, between the eyes, and in the ears to treat anxiety. The efficacy of the practice is also supported by anecdotal and empirical evidence. According to international media report, "acupuncture eases anxiety by regulating the nervous system, specifically by bringing the branches of the autonomic nervous system back into balance," Ashley Flores, a licensed acupuncturist in Chicago said. "Acupuncture treatment helps shift the body back into a relaxed state where the sympathetic system is more balanced and no longer dominating." Energy, or "qi," is said to go through the body along certain paths in Chinese medicine. "Sometimes the energy is blocked, defic...

5 Home remedies for sensitive teeth

You take a drink of iced tea, bite down on a candy bar, or slurp some hot soup and the electric stinging sensation in one or more of your teeth sends you flying out of your seat. You've got "sensitive teeth," a rather mild name for what can be a wildly uncomfortable condition. So what's going on? Why do your teeth react to hot, cold, sweet, or sour, and sometimes even to pressure? Dentists have to play detective to determine what's causing a patient's discomfort, since teeth become sensitive for many different reasons, from trauma to dental disease, which can destroy tooth pulp, requiring a root-canal procedure to relieve the pain. One or more teeth can become sensitive to even slight pressure if it has been "bruised" or otherwise traumatized -- by your accidentally biting down on a popcorn kernel, for example. Often, teeth feel sensitive after they've been cleaned, filled, or otherwise worked on at the dentist's office. Sometimes this ...

Ice bath benefits and risks: Exploring cold water therapy

Ice baths, also known as cold water immersion (CWI), have been utilised for centuries for their potential therapeutic benefits, with claims of reducing muscle soreness, alleviating pain, and enhancing mood. The process involves immersing the body in ice water for 5-15 minutes, constituting a form of cryotherapy, where the body is exposed to very cold temperatures briefly. When taking an ice bath, the cold water induces vasoconstriction, narrowing skin blood vessels, and redirecting blood to the core to maintain warmth. Upon exiting the bath, vasodilation occurs, pumping oxygen- and nutrient-rich blood back to the muscles, potentially reducing inflammation and pain. Hydrostatic pressure, exerted by immersing the body in water, further enhances blood flow to vital organs. Various forms of cold water therapy, including ice baths, cold showers, contrast water therapy, and the Wim Hof Method, offer different approaches to reap potential benefits. While cold water therapy may relieve...

10 signs you may have kidney disease

Chronic kidney disease, also called chronic kidney failure, involves a gradual loss of kidney function. Your kidneys filter wastes and excess fluids from your blood, which are then removed in your urine. Advanced chronic kidney disease can cause dangerous levels of fluid, electrolytes and wastes to build up in your body. In the early stages of chronic kidney disease, you might have few signs or symptoms. You might not realize that you have kidney disease until the condition is advanced. Treatment for chronic kidney disease focuses on slowing the progression of kidney damage, usually by controlling the cause. But, even controlling the cause might not keep kidney damage from progressing. Chronic kidney disease can progress to end-stage kidney failure, which is fatal without artificial filtering (dialysis) or a kidney transplant. 1. Fatigue – being tired all of the time Healthy kidneys make a hormone called erythropoietin, or EPO, that tells your body to make oxygen-carrying red blo...

Can certain foods increase stress and anxiety?

In the pursuit of healthier choices, the connection between food and mental health is underlined by experts warning that some foods might worsen stress and anxiety. According to media report, Doctor Michelle DiBlasi, a psychiatrist at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, emphasises the addictive nature of certain foods, triggering a dopamine rush akin to substance use in the brain. Stress eating and emotional eating often intertwine with mental health, especially for those grappling with anxiety. DiBlasi notes that turning to food in such situations, particularly foods high in sugar, fat, and salt, such as burgers, carbonated drinks, and processed sweets can lead to genuine food addiction. The cravings for these elements can be overpowering, making it challenging for individuals to halt consumption once started. DiBlasi advocates a crucial first step: when the stress response kicks in, pause and listen to your body. Advising people to eat based on body cues rather than emotions, she s...

Eating more navy beans may help with colorectal cancer prevention

Colorectal cancer which affects the large intestine, including the colon and the rectum is the third most common cancer in the world. Colorectal cancer is highly treatable and in some cases even curable when caught early enough. However, colorectal cancer does not always show symptoms at an early stage. Only about three to four out of 10 (35.5%) of colorectal cancers are diagnosed at its earliest stage, where the disease is localized. If treatment is successful for colorectal cancer, recent research shows that despite improvements in treatment between 7% and 29% of people may have a recurrence of the condition within five years of treatment, depending on site and stage. Although it is not possible to fully prevent colorectal cancer, past studies show regular physical activity, keeping a healthy weight, and making certain nutrition choices can help. While other dry beans, peas, and lentils have nutritional profiles that are also likely to stimulate the gut microbiome, Dr. Carrie ...
