Meta has confirmed its acquisition of Limitless, a US-based startup that develops a wearable pendant capable of recording and summarizing conversations and meetings using artificial intelligence. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.

A Meta spokesperson said, “We’re excited that Limitless will be joining Meta to help accelerate our work to build AI-enabled wearables.”

CEO Mark Zuckerberg has made AI a strategic priority for Meta, aiming to achieve what he calls “personal superintelligence.”

AI technologies are already enhancing Meta’s apps like Facebook and Instagram, as well as its smartglasses, developed in collaboration with EssilorLuxottica.

Limitless co-founder and CEO Dan Siroker shared on the startup’s website, “Meta shares our vision of bringing personal superintelligence to everyone, and we’re excited to join them to make this a reality.”

Founded five years ago in Denver, Limitless has raised $33 million from investors including Andreessen Horowitz and OpenAI co-founders Sam Altman and Greg Brockman. Its latest valuation in 2023 was $368 million, according to PitchBook.

Siroker emphasized how the landscape for AI wearables has changed: “We’re no longer working on a fringe idea. We’re building a future that now seems inevitable.”

Zuckerberg has also launched an aggressive recruitment campaign, hiring executives from OpenAI, Apple, and Google with multibillion-dollar offers.

Earlier this year, Meta invested heavily in Scale AI, bringing in co-founder Alexandr Wang to lead a new unit called Superintelligence Labs.

This acquisition marks another step in Meta’s ambitious plan to integrate AI deeply into wearable devices, signaling the company’s commitment to leading the next wave of personal AI technology.

The deal to buy Limitless appears to be the first major acquisition by Meta since it finalized its buyout of virtual reality firm Within Unlimited in 2023, after a court rejected an attempt by US regulators to block the deal over competition concerns.

The courtroom loss was seen as a setback for then-FTC head Lina Khan, who was an advocate of imposing tougher scrutiny on Big Tech companies on antitrust matters.
