Saudi Arabia to host Ukraine peace talks, top official says

Saudi Arabia to host Ukraine peace talks
Ukrainian official says Saudi Arabia gathering will discuss Kyiv’s 10-point peace formula, which calls for departure of all Russian troops.

Saudi Arabia is preparing to host a summit to discuss Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s plan for peace in his country amid the ongoing Russian invasion, according to a senior official in Kyiv.

Andriy Yermak, Zelenskyy’s chief of staff, said on Sunday that officials from several countries would take part in the Saudi Arabian summit but did not say when or in which city the meeting will be held.

An international news journal, which first reported on the summit citing “diplomats involved in the discussion”, said the talks would take place on August 5 and 6, in the city of Jeddah, with some 30 countries attending.

The Journal said Ukrainian and Western officials hope the efforts could culminate in a peace summit later this year where global leaders would sign up to shared principles for resolving the war.

Yermak, writing on Telegram, said discussions will take place on the Ukrainian Peace Formula, which “contains 10 fundamental points, the implementation of which will not only ensure peace for Ukraine, but also create mechanisms tocounter future conflicts in the world”.

Previously, Ukraine has described the 10-point peace formula as including the restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity, the withdrawal of Russian troops, the release of all prisoners, a tribunal for those responsible for the aggression and security guarantees for Ukraine.

“We are deeply convinced that the Ukrainian peace plan should be taken as a basis, because the war is taking place on our land,” Yermak said.

His statement described the 10 points as being “discussed individually and in groups with representatives of more than 50 countries on an almost weekly basis”.

He added that the meeting in Saudi Arabia follows on from a gathering of senior officials in the Danish capital, Copenhagen, in late June. Countries that attended the initial meeting included Brazil, India, Turkey and South Africa.

For the Jeddah summit, the 30 invitees include Chile, Egypt, the European Union, Indonesia, Mexico, Poland, the United Kingdom, the United States and Zambia, according to the Journal.

Russia has not been invited, according to an international news agency. Citing an unnamed official, the an international news agency said a high-level official from US President Joe Biden’s administration is also expected to attend the event.

There was no immediate comment from Saudi Arabia.

The planned summit there follows a visit by Zelenskyy to an Arab League summit in Jeddah in May to press those nations to back Kyiv.

Arab nations have largely remained neutral since Russia launched the full-scale war on Ukraine in February 2022, in part over their military and economic ties to Moscow.

Saudi Arabia also has maintained a close relationship with Russia as part of the OPEC+ group. But hosting such talks helps raise the profile of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who has sought to reach a detente with Iran and push for peace in the kingdom’s years-long war in Yemen.

For Ukraine, the talks coincide with its efforts to beef up its security posture.

Yermak also said on Sunday that Ukraine will begin talks with the US next week on a bilateral agreement on security guarantees. He said the talks stem from a declaration by leaders of the Group of 7 nations earlier this month laying the groundwork for each nation to negotiate agreements to help Ukraine bolster its military.

Yermak said Ukraine is looking for “specific and long-term commitments that will ensure Ukraine’s ability to win now and deter Russian aggression in the future”.

US officials had not confirmed the negotiations.

Other peace plans have meanwhile been floated amid the war.

Russian President Vladimir Putin finished meetings in Saint Petersburg over the weekend with African leaders about their own proposed plan. China and Pope Francis have also been working separately on their own. No details of those plans have been released.

Pakistan Stock Exchange crosses 48,000 points

Pakistan Stock Exchange crosses 48,000 points
Pakistan Stock Exchange's (PSX) benchmark KSE-100 index jumped past the 48,000 mark, a 24-month high, on Monday as analysts expect the positive sentiment to continue in the coming days.

Bulls took over the market after Pakistan's deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and later, news on the country's mineral sector strengthened the gains further.

During the intra-day trade, the benchmark index increased by 1,010.72 points or 2.15% to reach 48,062.56 points, data showed, up from the previous close of 47,076.9 points — a 21-month high.

The market has gained more than 6,600 points (+15.9%) since Pakistan's staff-level agreement with the IMF for a $3 billion Standby Agreement.

Under the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC), the government is also holding a Pakistan Mineral Summit regarding Reko Diq and other mines and mineral projects, beginning August 1, seeking foreign investment.

Speaking to private news channel, Pakistan-Kuwait Investment Company's Head of Research Samiullah Tariq attributed the expected investment in minerals as a "major" contributor to the market's rise.

"Major factor is optimism regarding investment in minerals; positive expectations of investment in other ventures/sectors as a spillover of investment in mining," he said.

Four leading Pakistani state-owned companies have also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate on a $10 billion Greenfield Refinery project to be jointly developed with Saudi Aramco at the strategic Gwadar port in Balochistan.

Head of Equities at Intermarket Securities Raza Jafri told private news channel that today's run-up is broad-based, led by banks on strong results and valuation rerating, and by energy stocks on hopes of energy reforms and circular debt resolution.

He mentioned that the overall turnaround has come on the back of Pakistan securing the IMF SBA program, which has unlocked fresh financing from friendly countries and has given confidence to investors, including foreign funds.

"This remains a cheap market, with the potential to make new all-time highs provided risks are managed well," the analyst said, noting that today's rise takes returns in July to more than 15%, easily making it the best month in more than three years.

Alpha Beta Core CEO Khurram Schehzad said clarity on the political front was also boosting the investors' confidence — as the government will likely dissolve the assemblies before their tenure ends and hand over the reins to interim rulers.

"Political clarity, timely expected political transition, being on track with the IMF, a portion of the gas circular debt being paid, and some global leaders visiting Pakistan showing their investment interest are some of the reasons for stocks to continue momentum."

Beijing records heaviest rainfall of year as Typhoon Doksuri tapers off

Beijing records heaviest rainfall of year as Typhoon Doksuri tapers off
The Chinese capital, Beijing, has recorded its heaviest rainfall this year as the remnants of Typhoon Doksuri passed through the city, forcing the evacuation of tens of thousands of people from high-risk areas in the region.

According to international media, average rainfall in Beijing overnight on Monday reached 140.7mm (5.5 inches), with the maximum recorded rainfall in the Fangshan area hitting 500.4 mm (19.7 inches),

Rains in the southern and western areas were expected to be heavier on Monday morning.

There was no reported damage or casualties, state media said.

Doksuri is one of the strongest storms to hit China in years and hundreds of millions of people in northern parts of the country, including in Beijing, remain under a red alert – the highest level – for heavy rain.

The alert covers Beijing’s 22 million people and Tianjin’s 14 million, as well as parts of Hebei, Shanxi, Shandong and Henan provinces.

It is the first time since 2011 that such a heavy rainfall warning has been issued, according to local media.

More than 31,000 people have been evacuated from high-risk areas in Beijing, according to Chinese state media, while another 20,000 were relocated from parts of the nearby city of Shijiazhuang.

Work was halted on more than 4,000 construction sites in Beijing, almost 20,000 buildings were inspected for damage, and scenic spots in the city were closed, media reported.

Doksuri was initially categorised as a super typhoon as it tore across the Pacific Ocean earlier this week but it lost some intensity as it neared the Philippines, where it killed more than a dozen people.

It still brought colossal waves and howling winds of up to 175km/h (110mph) to China’s southeast on Friday, causing significant damage.

More than 880,000 people in southern Fujian province were affected by the storm, state media said on Sunday.

While Doksuri continues to taper off, forecasters warned that typhoon Khanun was approaching and was set to strike China’s densely populated coast this week.

Authorities said Khanun could inflict further damage to corn and other crops that have already been hit by Doksuri.

The storms are hitting China after a summer of record temperatures, with scientists saying the extreme weather is exacerbated by climate change.

Death toll rises to 46 in Bajaur blast
At least 46 people were killed and nearly 200 wounded after a suicide bomber targeted a public gathering of Jamiat-e-Ulema Islam-F in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Bajaur district, a senior government official said.

The blast occurred on Sunday afternoon at Shandy Morr in the outskirts of Khar city which is the district headquarters of Bajaur.

Inspector General of Police in KP Akhtar Hayat Khan told a private new channel that the suicide bombing occurred during the speech of JUI-F Khar’s head Ziaullah Jan at the workers’ convention.

The IGP said that the police have found the remains of the suicide bomber, while further investigations were under way.

Forty people were killed in the blast while 115 were injured, out of which 65 are getting medical treatment at the DHQ Khar, Medical Officer of District Headquarters Hospital Bajaur Doctor Liaquat Ali said. He added that more than 30 were moved to Timargara.

The authorities were shifting over 20 critically injured to Peshawar Hospital, he added.

Earlier, KP’s health minister Riaz Anwar confirmed the death of 39 people and more than a hundred injured.

“I can confirm that in the hospital we have 39 dead bodies, with 123 wounded that includes 17 patients in a serious condition,” he told news agency.

Provincial governor Haji Ghulam Ali confirmed the death toll to the international news agency.

“A senior leader from the party was due to address the ceremony, but before his arrival a bomb explosion took place,” IG Akhtar Hayat told news agency.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s JUI-F party was holding a workers’ convention in preparation for the general election expected later this year and a large number of supporters had gathered.

KP’s Information Minister Barrister Feroz Jamal Shah Kakalkhel said in a statement that initial reports suggested around 35 people had been killed and around 200 wounded in the blast.

The death toll is constantly rising as some of the injured were rushed to hospitals in Peshawar and other cities.

How to Get Rid of Ants

How to Get Rid of Ants
Ants invade homes for one reason: food. Whether you left crumbs on the kitchen table or forgot to take the trash out, where there's food, there's ants. Ants aren't all bad.

They help to clean up dead animals and naturally create topsoil as they burrow into the ground. But they can also pose a danger to you and your home.

Ant bites aren't only annoying, they can trigger an allergic reaction in some people. A typical ant bite can cause pain and discomfort, but bites from a fire ant can lead to difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing, nausea and dizziness. While fire ants pack a big sting, other ants can do a different type of damage.

Carpenter ants, similar to termites, can cause damage to your home's walls, decks, doorframes and other wooden materials. These ants create nests in wooden areas that are moist and starting to decay, and cause damage by tunneling through the wood.

But if your home has become infested with ants, don't worry. Getting rid of them is fast, easy and cheap. Most of our suggestions below use ingredients that are safe to use around babies and pets. Here are some home remedies to quickly and successfully rid your house of ants.

White vinegar: Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water or just use straight vinegar. Wipe your counters, tables, appliances and jars with the solution to kill ants and prevent them from returning. Although you won't be able to smell the scent after a while, ants will.
Hand soap: Spray a soapy water solution into holes and crevices that may be the entry point for ants in your home. Soap is an effective remedy for preventing ants from entering your home, because it removes the scent of ant pheromones, which ants use to communicate with each other.
Lemon juice: Similar to vinegar and hand soap, lemon juice can remove an ant's scent trail. Mix one part lemon juice with three parts water and spray the solution on entryways or around your home.
Baking soda: Mix one part baking soda with one part powdered sugar (ants love sweet things) and place it in an area where you see ants. Once they eat the baking soda mix, it will react with an acidic material in their stomachs and usually kills them.
Cinnamon: You can use two different types of cinnamon to either kill or repel ants. Mix cinnamon essential oil with water to use as a spray on ant trails and around cracks in your home. You can also sprinkle powdered cinnamon around openings, which will suffocate ants when they inhale it.
Mint: Ants are not fans of mint, especially peppermint. Mix 10 to 20 drops of peppermint essential oils with 2 cups of water and spray the mixture in places where you find ants. Make sure to keep the mixture away from pets.
Black pepper/cayenne pepper: If you find an anthill in or near your home, sprinkle black pepper or cayenne pepper into their nest. The spicy powder will prevent them from coming back but won't kill them.
Borax: Although this is not child-friendly, borax is considered a very effective way to kill household ants. That's because borax kills ants slowly so they have time to take the bait back to the colony for other ants to eat. Sprinkle it in powder form or mix 1.5 tablespoons of borax with a half-cup of sugar and 1.5 cups of warm water. Spray the liquid into ant nests or set it in a small container as bait.

(You can also make a paste of borax and honey or corn syrup and set it out). Make sure to keep borax away from babies and young children, because it can cause skin irritations and headaches.
If all else fails, you can always call a professional exterminator.

At least 12 killed in Thailand fireworks warehouse explosion

At least 12 killed in Thailand fireworks warehouse explosion
At least 12 people have been killed and more than 100 others injured after an explosion ripped through a fireworks warehouse in southern Thailand, officials said.

According to international media reports, the blast in the town of Sungai Kolok in the southern province of Narathiwat on Saturday is thought to have been caused by welding during construction work on the building, the provincial governor said.

“There are 10 deaths plus the remains of two unidentified persons, which were sent for DNA checks,” officials said, adding that 121 were injured, two severely.

The Narathiwat province’s Public Relations Department said more than 200 households were affected. It said that officials believe there are still a number of people trapped under the debris. The blast caused damage in a radius of about 500 metres (1,640 feet), it said.

Videos posted on social media from the site showed a huge plume of smoke over the area and many damaged structures, cars and motorbikes, as well as streets covered with debris. Many of the houses and other buildings appear to have collapsed roofs and walls.

Thai media said as many as 500 houses were damaged by the explosion in the border town on the frontier with Malaysia.

Witness Seksan Taesen, who lives 100 metres (328 feet) away from the warehouse, said there was “chaos” after the blast.

“I was playing with my phone inside the house then suddenly, I heard a loud, thunderous noise and my whole house shook,” Seksan told reporters.

“Then I saw my roof was wide open. I looked outside and I saw houses collapsing and people lying on the ground everywhere. It was chaos.”

Narathiwat police commander, Police Major General Chalermporn Khamkhiew, said shortly before the explosion firecrackers had been delivered.

“We are investigating if those firecrackers were transported legally or illegally,” he said.

“As of now, we do not see any licence for possession of firecrackers or firecracker sales,” he said.

The blast detonated from roughly 1,000kg (2,200 pounds) of gunpowder, he said, causing two holes roughly 2 metres ( 6.5 feet) deep and 6 metres (20 feet) wide.

“We have issued a summons to the owner of the factory with the charge of negligence, which caused the accident,” said Colonel Suthawet Thareethai, police chief in Muno district.

US offers 'unflagging support' to ousted leader of Niger amid coup attempt

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke Friday with Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum and reiterated the US' "unflagging support and emphasized the importance of his continuing leadership in Niamey," according to the State Department.

"He praised Bazoum’s role in promoting security not only in Niger but the wider West Africa region," spokesman Matthew Miller said in a statement, "Secretary Blinken underscored that the United States will continue to work to ensure the full restoration of constitutional order and democratic rule in Niger."

In a separate telephone call with former President Mahamadou Issoufou, Blinken expressed his "grave concern" that democratically-elected Bazoum "remains in detention and that negotiations to ensure constitutional order in Niger were at an impasse," said Miller.

"The Secretary regretted that those detaining Bazoum were threatening years of successful cooperation and hundreds of millions of dollars of assistance that support the Nigerien people," said the statement.

Blinken asked Issoufou to "continue efforts to resolve the situation in favor of the civilian-led democratically elected government," it said.

The top US diplomat held a separate call with his French counterpart, Catherine Colonna, where he expressed his "deep concern over the events unfolding in Niger and the detention of democratically elected President Bazoum," said Miller.

The two discussed the "urgency of efforts to restore constitutional order in Niger," and Blinken "underlined the strong role that Niger has had in promoting peace and security in West Africa," according to the statement.

Earlier this week, soldiers calling themselves the National Council for the Safeguarding of the Country (CNSP), delivered a statement on Nigerien state television shortly after detaining Bazoum, saying they took the step due to the “deteriorating security situation and bad governance.”

Bazoum was elected in 2021 in Niger’s first democratic transition of power since it gained independence from French colonial rule in 1960.

The US has just over 1,000 troops in Niger, and operates a drone base near Agadez. It has worked closely with Nigerien authorities to carry out counterterrorism operations in the region.

Yorkshire cricket club punished over Azeem Rafiq racism scandal

Yorkshire cricket club punished over Azeem Rafiq racism scandal
Yorkshire County Cricket Club were slapped with a huge 48-point deduction in the English County Championship on Friday after admitting four charges related to the Azeem Rafiq racism scandal.

Pakistan-born bowler Rafiq, 32, went public with allegations of racism and bullying in September 2020, related to his two spells at the English county.

The independent Cricket Discipline Commission (CDC) also fined the club 400,000 pounds ($514,000), 300,000 of which is suspended for two years.

The points penalty sends Yorkshire to the bottom of Division Two of the County Championship.

The Yorkshire board issued a statement accepting the sanctions.

“The CDC and ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board) have today acknowledged the vast amount of work done by YCCC to overcome the cultural issues that existed within the club, which allowed racist and discriminatory behaviour to go unchallenged,” it said.

“We are accountable for these issues, and we accepted four amended charges as part of a continued commitment to ensure we are able to move forward.”

But the Yorkshire board added: “We are disappointed to receive the point deductions which affects players and staff at the club, who were not responsible for the situation.”

ECB chief executive Richard Gould, who was not in post during the Rafiq scandal, said: “There can be no place for racism in our game, and the penalties announced by the Cricket Discipline Commission mark the end of a thorough disciplinary process.

“No one should have to experience what Azeem Rafiq went through in cricket, and we once again thank him for his courage in speaking out.”

Six former Yorkshire players were previously fined by the CDC after being found guilty of using racist language.

Separately, a damning report by the Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket (ICEC) last month revealed “widespread” racism, sexism and classism in English cricket.

The ICEC was established in 2021 following the racism scandal surrounding the treatment of Rafiq.

Flood wreak untold havoc across Pakistan

Flood wreak untold havoc across Pakistan
The province of Balochistan is facing a dire flood situation due to relentless monsoon rains, leading to the closure of the Bolan National Highway and isolating the region from other provinces of the country.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) reported that the torrential rains and flooded streams resulted in the tragic deaths of 10 people, including two women and two children in various rain-related incidents.

As the floods engulfed the region, 335 houses were inundated, with 112 of them completely destroyed and 232 partially damaged.

The deluge water wreaked havoc on essential infrastructure, sweeping away electricity poles in different areas, leading to a suspension of electricity supply and communication disruptions.

The temporary river bank at Pinjra Bridge in Bolan was once again affected by the flood, causing the closure of the national highway connecting Balochistan to Sindh and Punjab. Passengers have been left stranded as a result.

In addition to the Bolan National Highway, the Quetta-Karachi National Highway has also been closed due to the non-construction of the Hub Bridge.

PDMA issued a warning as the water level in Mirani Dam reached 248.90 feet, necessitating the release of water through the spillway.

With more torrential rains predicted to hit various parts of the province, including Zhob, Barkhan, and Qila Saifullah, the situation remains critical, and authorities are on high alert to respond to any emergencies.

First high flood warning of the season for Guddu and Sukkur barrages

On the other hand, India’s floodwater left in the Sutlej merged with the Indus River, subsequently resulting in the issuance of the first high flood warning of the season at Guddu and Sukkur barrages.

A 50,000 cusec floodwater is expected to pass through Guddu Barrage on Sunday, followed by 50,000 cusec water passing through Sukkur Barrage on Monday.

According to the Flood Warning Center, 420,000 cusec floodwater has been released from Taunsa Barrage and 10,000 cusecs from Panjand.

Meanwhile, other regions in Pakistan are also experiencing the impact of the ongoing monsoon season. The Punjab province, in particular, is bracing for potential flooding as the PDMA reports chances of stormy rains in various districts.

According to a PDMA spokesperson, the water levels in the rivers across Punjab have also been rising steadily due to the torrential rains. As a result, the Baloki area in the Ravi River is currently experiencing a low level of flood.

The inflow and outflow at Baluki Headwater have been recorded at 58,830 cusecs and 42,030 cusecs, respectively.

China may be planning overseas naval bases in Asia and Africa, say analysts

China may be planning overseas naval bases in Asia and Africa
Beijing believed to be aiming to rival US’s global maritime power and defeat western sanctions, report concludes.

China’s military may be planning to build a host of overseas naval bases, as it hopes to protect shipping routes and strengthen its ability to resist sanctions from the US and its allies, analysis has found.

Hambantota in Sri Lanka, Bata in Equatorial Guinea and Gwadar in Pakistan are the three most likely locations for a Chinese naval base to be established in the next two to five years, according to an analysis by AidData, a US-based research institute, published on Wednesday.

The report’s authors considered the amount of development financing issued by Chinese state-owned banks to port projects, the strategic value of existing infrastructure and strong relationships with host country governments, among other factors, to come up with a list of eight leading options for future Chinese naval bases.

China’s People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) currently only has one overseas military base in Djibouti, on the coast of the Horn of Africa.

But as the rivalry between the US and China heats up, Beijing is catching up with Washington’s overseas maritime strength. Unlike the US, China is not party to international defence alliances – its only formal defence treaty is with North Korea. That makes developing overseas naval bases a priority for China’s military development, argue the AidData researchers.

PLAN’s future ambitions may be closely aligned with China’s belt and road initiative. Four of the eight bases shortlisted by AidData are in Africa. Although China’s most pressing maritime ambitions are in the South China Sea and the Taiwan strait the report’s authors note that those operations could be conducted “entirely from the Chinese mainland and home naval bases”. PLAN bases farther afield would help China to preserve shipping routes, especially in the event of western sanctions, and gather intelligence.

Hambantota port in Sri Lanka is considered to be the most likely location for a PLAN base in the near future, according to AidData. The port, which opened in 2010, was financed by a $306.7m loan from China Exim Bank, a state-owned development bank. AidData says that Beijing exercises “direct control over the facility”.

In 2017, a Chinese firm took over control of the port of a 99-year lease, after the Sri Lankan government fell into difficulty servicing its overseas debts. Hambantota is often cited as an example of China’s “debt trap diplomacy”, but economists have argued the saga is more likely to reflect the Sri Lankan government’s instability rather than a concerted Chinese strategy to take control of an overseas base.

“It is a time-honoured truth that the flag often follows trade,” said Blake Herzinger, a research fellow at the University of Sydney’s United States Studies Centre. “While these port investments are unlikely, in most cases, to become formal bases for the PLAN, it is useful for the [Chinese Communist party] to have friendly locations where the PLAN can seek resupply and repair around the world.”

On Tuesday, the US satellite imagery company BlackSky released updated images of the Ream naval base in Cambodia, where the US government suspects Beijing is building a facility to boost its naval presence in the region. The base is being built with Chinese assistance, but Beijing and the Cambodian government deny that a People’s Liberation Army presence will be allowed there. Defence analysts say a military base at Ream would give significant strategic benefits to China, including access to the Gulf of Thailand.

The images show that a pier at the base is nearing completion, and is strikingly similar to the one at China’s Djibouti base. The pier is long enough to dock warships including aircraft carriers, BlackSky told an international newspaper, bolstering a previous assessment that the facility was being prepared for deepwater vessels. “It is worth noting the Cambodian navy operates only smaller patrol boats and is unlikely to need deep channels for its own uses,” AidData said in its report, which added that while other sites had a “headstart”, the Ream base was likely to be a future Chinese naval port.

Pakistan denounces desecration of Holy Quran in Denmark

Mumtaz Zahra Baloch
Pakistan strongly condemns the desecration of the Holy Quran and dishonoring of the Pakistani flag in front of the Embassy of Pakistan in Copenhagen, Denmark.

According to Foreign Office, a strong protest has been lodged with the Government of Denmark. We expect the Danish authorities to take all measures necessary to stop such acts of hatred and incitement.

The intent of such evil acts is to insult two billion Muslims around the world and create friction amongst communities, cultures, and countries.

These acts, by any definition, do not constitute freedom of expression. Nor can the permission to carry out provocative acts of religious hatred be justified under the pretext of freedom of expression, opinion and protest.

As the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has said, “speech and inflammatory acts against Muslims are offensive, irresponsible and wrong”.

Pakistan has always maintained that freedom of expression comes with responsibilities. It is the responsibility of national governments, regional organizations and the international community at large to call out, condemn and proactively prevent the vile acts of Islamophobia and religious hatred.

As urged by the UN Human Rights Council, the relevant countries must address, prevent and prosecute such acts of religious hatred.

The international community must raise its collective voice against Islamophobia and work together to promote inter-faith harmony and peaceful co-existence.

Pakistan, for its part, will continue to raise the question of Islamophobia at the international level.

This issue was a key point of telephone conversations of Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari with his counterparts from Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Turkiye and with Secretary General of OIC and the UN Secretary General. Issues pertaining to these recurrent acts of Islamophobia are being discussed at the OIC Headquarters in Jeddah and the Human Rights Council in Geneva.

How to protect yourself from iPhone thieves locking you out of your own device

How to protect yourself from iPhone
A complex but concerning method of gaining control over a user’s iPhone and permanently locking them out the device appears to be on the rise.

Some iPhone thieves are exploiting a security setting, called the recovery key, that makes it nearly impossible for owners to access their photos, messages, data and more, according to a recent an international report. Some victims also told the publication their bank accounts were drained after the thieves gained access to their financial apps.

It’s important to note, however, this type of takeover is hard to pull off. It requires a criminal essentially watching an iPhone user enter the device’s passcode – for example, by looking over their shoulder at a bar or sporting event – or manipulating the device’s owner so they’ll share their passcode. And that’s all before they physically steal the device.

From there, a thief could use the passcode to change the device’s Apple ID, turn off “Find my iPhone” so their location can’t be tracked, and then reset the recovery key, a complex 28-digit code intended to protect its owners from online hackers.

Apple requires this key to help reset or regain access to an Apple ID in an effort to bolster the user’s security, but if a thief changes it, the original owner will not have the new code and will be locked out of the account.

“We sympathize with people who have had this experience and we take all attacks on our users very seriously, no matter how rare,” an Apple spokesperson said in a statement to an international news channnel. “We work tirelessly every day to protect our users’ accounts and data, and are always investigating additional protections against emerging threats like this one.”

On its website, Apple warns “you’re responsible for maintaining access to your trusted devices and your recovery key. If you lose both of these items, you could be locked out of your account permanently.”

Jeff Pollard, VP and principal analyst at Forrester Research, said the company should offer more customer support options and “ways for Apple users to authenticate so they can reset these settings.”

For now, however, there are a handful of steps users can take to potentially protect themselves from having this happen to them.

Protect the passcode
The first step is protecting the passcode.

An Apple spokesperson told an international news channel that people can use Face ID or Touch ID when unlocking their phone in public to avoid revealing their passcode to anyone who might be watching.

Users can also set up a longer, alphanumeric passcode that’s harder for bad actors to figure out. Device owners should also change the passcode immediately if they believe someone else has seen it.

Screen Time settings
Another step someone could consider is a hack not necessarily endorsed by Apple but one that’s been circulating online. Within an iPhone’s Screen Time setting, which allows guardians to set up restrictions on how kids can use the device, there is the option to set up a secondary password that would be required from any user before they could successfully change an Apple ID.

By enabling this, a thief would be prompted for that secondary password before changing an Apple ID password.

Back up phone regularly
Finally, users can protect themselves by regularly backing up an iPhone – via iCloud or iTunes – so data can be recovered in the case an iPhone is stolen. At the same time, users may want to consider storing important photos or other sensitive files and data in another cloud service, such as Google Photos, Microsoft OneDrive, Amazon Photos or Dropbox.

This won’t stop a bad actor from gaining access to the device, but it should limit some of the fallout if it ever should happen.

History made at T20 World Cup qualifier as seamer claims world record haul

Syazrul Idrus
Malaysian seamer Syazrul Ezat has claimed the best figures by a bowler in T20 internationals (T20I).

Syazrul Ezat put up a sensational performance at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Asia Qualifier B 2023, registering a whopping seven wickets for just eight runs across four overs - a first in Men's T20I history.

The sensational record-breaking spell unfolded at the Bayuemas Oval in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday where Malaysia faced off against China.

Syazrul Ezat annihilated the Chinese lineup, contributing significantly to the team's dismissal for just 23 runs in 11.2 overs. Notably, the Malaysian pacer rattled the stumps of all seven batsmen he dismissed.

This historic event unravelled as China chose to bat first, a decision that saw them being brought to their knees by Ezat's lethal bowling. Victims to his thunderous spell included Wei Guolei, Wang Liuyang, Tian Senqun, Chen Zhuoyue, Wang Qi, Xie Kunkun, and Zhao Tianle.

The remaining wickets were shared between Pavandeep Singh and Vijay Unni. In response, Malaysia quickly chased down the target in 4.5 overs, with only minor hiccups, securing a thumping victory.

Ezat' record-shattering seven-fer outshone the previous record held by Nigeria's Peter Aho, who managed six wickets for five runs against Sierra Leone in 2021.

With this achievement, Ezat now leads the chart for the best bowling figures in Men's T20Is, followed by India's Deepak Chahar (6/7), Dinesh Nakrani of Uganda (6/7), and Ajantha Mendis (6/8) from Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, the win carries significant weight as the champion of this tournament will advance to the Asia Regional Qualifier in Nepal later this year. The top-performing teams from there will secure a spot in the T20 World Cup 2024.

Dar says China has rolled over $2.4bn loan for two years

Ishaq Dar
The Export-Import Bank of China (EXIM) has rolled over $2.4 billion to Pakistan, a sigh of relief for the outgoing Pakistan Democratic Movement-led government as it seeks to meet Pakistan's debt payments due next year.

In a tweet, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar said the bank has rolled over the amount for two years, which are due in the next two fiscal years — $1.2 billion in FY24 and the same amount in FY25.

"Pakistan will make interest payments only in both years," the finance minister, whose government's tenure will end in August, said.

The relief comes around a week after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had announced that the same financial institution — Exim Bank of China — had rolled over $600 million to Pakistan.

This amount was in addition to the more than $5 billion in loans that Pakistan's iron-brother China had rolled over in the last three months, the prime minister had said.

The funds from friendly countries, including China, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, have helped Pakistan avoid a sovereign default and secure a deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The IMF's board had approved a $3 billion Standby Arrangement for Pakistan on June 30, with $1.2 billion being released initially and the rest to be provided after two reviews.

Niger's military announces coup, soldiers detain president

Niger's military announces coup, soldiers detain president
Soldiers in Niger claimed to have removed President Mohamed Bazoum from power late on Wednesday, hours after members of the presidential guard detained the politician at his official residence.

According to international media reports, in a statement broadcast on national television, Colonel-Major Amadou Abdramane said that “the defence and security forces have decided to put an end to the regime you are familiar with”.

“This follows the continuous deterioration of the security situation, the bad social and economic management.”

The soldier said the country’s borders were closed and a nationwide curfew was in place. All institutions of the country were also suspended, he added.

Abdramane was seated and flanked by nine other officers wearing fatigues as he read out his statement. The group, which is calling itself the National Council for the Safeguarding of the Country, warned against any foreign intervention.

The announcement came after a day of uncertainty as Niger’s presidency reported that members of the elite guard unit were engaging in an “anti-Republican demonstration” and news agencies reported that Bazoum was being held at the palace by the mutinous forces.

It was unclear where the president was at the time of Abdramane’s announcement or if he had resigned.

“I spoke with President Bazoum earlier this morning and made clear that the United States resolutely supports him as the democratically elected president of Niger,” US Secretary of State Antony Blinken told reporters in New Zealand. “We call for his immediate release,” he said.

The military takeover, which marks the seventh coup in the West and Central Africa region since 2020, could further complicate Western efforts to help countries in the Sahel region fight against armed groups linked to al-Qaeda and ISIS (ISIL).

Niger, a land-locked former French colony, is a pivotal ally for Western powers seeking to help fight the armed groups and is also a key partner of the European Union in the fight against irregular migration from sub-Saharan Africa.

How to take better breaks at work

How to Take Better Breaks at Work
For many of us, being productive means spending more time working. It seems intuitive that the more time we spend on job tasks, the more we can get done. And not surprisingly, the popular literature is rife with advice on how to maximize work time.

For example, the “daily routines of CEOs” often include things like waking up at 4 am, working on the weekend, and even being “strategic about how often you go to the bathroom.” To tackle an ever-increasing workload, many workers choose to grind through, skip lunch, and stay after hours.

But the cost of being always-on (and doing it well!) is high. More than half of employees (59%) report feeling burnout according to a recent survey. Engagement has taken the opposite turn and is declining among the U.S. workers. Alarmingly, both high burnout and low engagement rates are associated with hindered performance. What can we do to address our declining well-being while maintaining performance?

Pausing work rather than pushing through might help with both aspects. Intrigued by two competing narratives — one focused on working more as an indicator of performance and the other on having regular respites to protect well-being — as well as mixed (and sometimes even conflicting) findings of individual studies on these topics, our team conducted a systematic review of existing research on workplace breaks.

In analyzing more than 80 studies, we (with our colleagues Zahra Premji, Timothy Wingate, Connie Deng, Lisa Bélanger, and Nick Turner) confirmed that pausing work throughout the day can improve well-being and also help with getting more work done. Counter to the popular narrative of working long work hours, our research suggests that taking breaks within work hours not only does not detract from performance, but can help boost it.

Why is taking breaks is beneficial for well-being and performance?
Like batteries that need to be recharged, we all have a limited pool of physical and psychological resources. When our batteries run low, we feel depleted, exhausted, and stressed out.

Pushing through work when very little energy is left in the tank puts a strain on well-being and work performance. In extreme cases, nonstop work can lead to a negative spiral: A worker tries to finish tasks despite their depleted state, is unable to do them well and even makes mistakes, resulting in more work and even fewer resources left to tackle those same tasks. This means that the more we work, the less productive and more exhausted we can become. Think about reading the same line for the fifth time, for example, and still not absorbing it.

The good news is that taking breaks can help employees to recharge and short-circuit the negative spiral of exhaustion and decreasing productivity. However, not all breaks are equal in terms of their effects.

What types of breaks are more effective for improving well-being and performance?
Breaks come in many different shapes and forms: exercising, browsing social media, going for a short walk, socializing with others, taking a nap, grabbing lunch, and so on. However, our systematic review shows that not all break types are equally effective. In other words, it matters how to pause work. Here are some common break elements to consider:

Break length and timing
A longer break does not necessarily equate to a better break. Disengaging from work only for a few minutes but on a regular basis (micro-breaks) can be sufficient for preventing exhaustion and boosting performance. For example, workers can take short breaks for snacking, stretching, or simply gazing out of the window. Further, timing of the break matters — shorter breaks are more effective in the morning, while longer breaks are more beneficial in the late afternoon. This is because fatigue worsens over the workday, and we need more break time in the afternoon to recharge.

Location of breaks
The place breaks take place can make a big difference in terms of recovery. Both stretching at a desk and going outside for a short walk seem like very similar break activities, but they might substantially differ in their recharging potential. Our review demonstrates that taking a break at outdoors and enjoying the green space is far better for recharging workers’ resources than simply staying at a desk.

Break activity
Engaging in physical activity during a break is effective for improving both well-being and performance. Exercising is an especially valuable recovery tool for mentally demanding work. However, the positive effects of this break type are short-lived, and employees need to exercise on a regular basis to yield its benefits.

Despite these benefits, exercise is not the most preferred way to spend breaks among employees. Our review shows that browsing social media is the most common break type — almost everyone (97%) report engaging in this activity. However, researchers find that scrolling through social media during work breaks can lead to emotional exhaustion. As a result, people end up with diminished creativity and work engagement instead of replenished resources. As such, this type of break may not be effective for boosting performance.

Furry break companions
One study in our review showed that interactions with a dog can lower levels of cortisol hormone, an objective indicator of stress. More research is needed in this area, as the effects on performance remain unclear. We do, however, have a strong suspicion that spending a break with a furry companion is effective for many employees. Research shows that interactions with pets can substantially boost individuals’ psychological wellbeing, which in turn is strongly linked to performance.

What can managers and organizations do to encourage breaks?
The mere availability of breaks does not guarantee benefits. Workers may not use their breaks in the most efficient ways or take them at all. As decision-makers and role models in organizations, managers are in an important position to encourage effective work breaks. This can be achieved in several ways:

Fostering positive attitudes toward breaks
While employees are generally positive about breaks and report that they are beneficial for performance, this sentiment is not always shared by managers. This can deter people from recharging. Thus, it is critical that managers are informed about the performance-related benefits of work breaks. For example, HR managers can incorporate this information in the company’s wellness training programs.

Organizations can also consider implementing “wellness moments” (akin to safety moments) during which they can share their strategies for taking effective breaks and brainstorm fun break activities. Even hanging posters about the benefits of and best practices in taking breaks in the workplace can go a long way.

Taking breaks themselves
Managers can communicate the importance of taking breaks by taking the most effective types regularly, which employees can mimic. For example, a manager who regularly walks her dog in a nearby park can communicate to her employees that she’ll be stepping away from work for a bit to do so.

Such strategy not only sets a positive example, but also sets clear boundaries around not interrupting breaks. Leading by example will help prevent the possible stigma and guilt associated with taking breaks. It’s promising that more and more organizational leaders are recognizing this and even share their regrets about not taking sufficient time off work.

Scheduling dedicated break times
Our review shows that many employees are unable to take regular breaks, or are dissuaded from doing so because of the stigma; thus, we recommend that managers and organizations schedule dedicated break times. Such break times need to be implemented with care. Rigid break schedules, such as mandating employees stop working only at a certain time and of a predetermined length, reduce employee autonomy and can even have harmful effects on employees.

We recommend offering break periods at a certain length such as one hour a day and leaving when and how often they want to take their breaks at the employee’s discretion. Offering flexible work schedules, innovative workplace break initiatives such as “break tickets” (e.g., giving daily tickets that allows employee to take an hour of their choice off), or providing on-site social or physical activities could be some examples of optimal break scheduling.

Creating spaces for breaks
As we highlighted above, the location of breaks can play an important role in maximizing their benefits. For example, having a small park or indoor green space can communicate the organization’s commitment to facilitating work breaks and enhance the benefits of breaks in relation to employee performance.

To further yield benefits of outdoor breaks, you could also make it an off-leash dog park where employees who enjoy interacting with animals can do so. This can also serve as a recruitment tool as the demand for pet-friendly workplaces is rising, and many companies have already adopted pet-friendly policies.

Organizations with employees working from home can also make use of the spaces available to them by arranging online park meetings where remote workers can join the meeting while walking or sitting at an outdoor space that is convenient to them. Alternatively, they can allocate a “break budget” for employees to create their own break space. For example, employees can buy an indoor plant or a yoga mat.

Employee performance has always been a concern for organizations, and more organizations are making efforts to address employee well-being today. Work breaks as a promising tool to improve both. Organizations need to recognize the importance of breaks and engage in deliberate efforts to facilitate effective breaks.

Cambodian PM Hun Sen to step down after four decades

Hun Sen
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, one of the world's longest-serving leaders, has said he will resign and hand power to his eldest son after almost four decades of hardline rule.

"I would like to ask for understanding from the people as I announce that I will not continue as prime minister," the 70-year-old said in a special broadcast on state television on Wednesday.

According to international media reports, his Cambodian People's Party (CPP) won a landslide victory in an election on Sunday with no strong opposition, taking 82 percent of the vote, paving the way for a dynastic succession to his eldest son.

Hun Sen has trailed the handover to his son for a year and a half, and the 45-year-old played a leading role in campaigning for Sunday's vote.

But the outgoing leader has made it clear that he still intends to wield influence, even after he steps down, scotching the notion the country could change direction.

As per reports, election authorities disqualified the only serious challenger, the Candlelight Party, on a technicality in advance of the election, and the CPP is expected to win all but five lower house seats.

The government hailed the 84.6 percent turnout as evidence of the country's "democratic maturity" but Western powers including the United States and European Union condemned the poll as neither free nor fair.

Under Hun Sen, Cambodia has tacked close to Beijing, benefiting from huge Chinese investment and infrastructure projects, including the redevelopment of a naval base that has alarmed Washington.

China welcomed Sunday's election, with President Xi Jinping sending Hun Sen a personal message of congratulation.

China defers $2.1b debt payment to Pakistan for two years
China has approved the deferment of a loan of $2.1 billion to Pakistan for two years.

China Exim Bank has approved extending Pakistan’s $2.1 billion loan for a time span of two years, according to the sources from Ministry of Finance.

The respective bank issued an official letter to the Pakistani authorities highlighting the extension of the aforementioned loan from July 21, 2023, to June 30, 2025, sources added.

Moreover, the bank further informed that Pakistan would not have to bare any additional markup on this extension.

It is worth noting that Exim Bank rolled over Pakistan’s $600 million loan on July 18 which helped increase the country’s Foreign Exchange Reserves.

Earlier, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that China has rolled over a $600 million loan to Pakistan, helping shore up the country’s foreign exchange reserves.

“Exim Bank of China rolled over $600 million to Pakistan, which increased our foreign currency reserves,” the premier said, adding that the assistance from friendly countries is improving economic indicators.

Pakistan-India World Cup match likely to be rescheduled

Pakistan-India World Cup match likely to be rescheduled
The match between Pakistan and India at the upcoming 50-over World Cup scheduled for October 15 in Ahmedabad is likely to be rescheduled due to the date coinciding with the beginning of the Navratri festival, Indian media reported on Wednesday.

The Navratri festival, which is held in honour of Hindu Goddess Durga, is celebrated over a period of nine days.

“We have been told by the security agencies that a high-profile game like India vs Pakistan, for which thousands of travelling fans are expected to reach Ahmedabad, should be avoided since they will be stretched because of Navratri,” a top official from India’s cricket board, who did not wish to be identified, told media.

“We are mulling the options that we have and a decision will be taken soon,” the official said.

Indian media also reported that Board of Cricket Control for India (BCCI) Secretary Jay Shah had called a meeting in New Delhi on July 27 (tomorrow) of all the associations hosting the World Cup matches.

“I feel it will be in the best interest of all concerned that we meet again to exchange notes and take stock of any issue which needs discussion and decision,” the report quoted the letter sent by Shah as saying.

“It is learnt that the board might apprise the members of the security concerns around Ahmedabad and finalise a new date for the match,” Indian media noted.

The most-awaited clash was set to be played in Ahmedabad on October 15, after the tournament begins on October 5 with holders England taking on New Zealand at the world’s biggest cricket stadium in Ahmedabad.

The match between cricket arch-rivals would mark the first time in seven years that India will host Pakistan’s cricket team.
