Protect your child from heatwaves: Dos and don'ts for kids

Protect your child from heatwaves
Usually, playing and exercising outside aids in a child's physical and mental health development but outdoor activities for children should be limited when there is scorching heat outside.

Currently, the hotter days during summer have become a matter of concern for the entire country so, children should be protected during heat waves and parents should follow these essential tips and ensure that the child is safe and sound.

Summer is known to be pleasing as many people go on vacation and enjoy outdoor activities where children especially are happy as they get to play their favourite games outdoors but unfortunately, summer can also give a tough time to children.

In an interview with international magzine, Dr Sandeep Sawant, Consultant and Head Department of Paediatrics shared, “High temperatures and extreme heat can cause children to become sick. It can invite dehydration, heat exhaustion, heat cramps, and heat stroke which is a medical emergency and can turn fatal for the child. Did you know?

A heat stroke can cause permanent damage to important organs, or even death, if not treated immediately. It is the need of the hour for parents to take enough care of their children.”

He suggested a few dos and don’ts when it comes to children:

· Children should avoid going outdoors between 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm and spend time at home. Parents can play indoor games with children such as carom, board games such as snake and ladder, chess, and ludo, read, listens to music, and watch educational movies.

· Encourage the child to drink enough water to avoid dehydration. On hot days, infants on breast milk can be given additional breast milk, but they should not be given water, especially in the first 6 months. Infants receiving formula can be given additional formula in a bottle too.

· Motivate the child to stay active at home as summer can lead to lethargy and fatigue.

· Try to block out the sun at home during the day by closing curtains and blinds. Open the window when the weather outside is cool.

· Opt for -colored, loose-fitting clothing made from natural fabrics like cotton and linen for your child.

· Do not leave your children or pets in cars when the weather is hot outside.

· Consult the doctor if the child is having a headache, diarrhoea, faster breathing, nausea, vomiting, and fainting spells. See to it that the child is safe when there is a hot climate outside.

New images reveal what’s happening on the sun as it approaches ‘solar maximum’

New and unprecedented solar images captured by Inouye Solar Telescope
New images of the sun’s surface captured by a powerful ground-based solar telescope have revealed sunspots and other features in unprecedented detail.

The eight images, released on May 19, were taken using the National Science Foundation’s Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope, a 4-meter (13.1-foot) telescope located on the island of Maui in Hawaii.

Although the sun is becoming increasingly active as the July 2025 solar maximum — the peak of the sun’s 11-year cycle — draws closer, the photos showcase the quieter aspects of the solar surface.

Cool, dark sunspots dot the photosphere, or the sun’s surface where the magnetic field is strong, and they can be the size of Earth or larger. Clusters of sunspots are the cause of solar flares and coronal mass ejections — when plasma and part of the magnetic field pinch off from the sun’s outer atmosphere, or corona, and go streaming across the solar system.

This composite image of the Sun includes high-energy X-ray data from NASA's Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) shown in blue; lower energy X-ray data from the X-ray Telescope (XRT) on the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency's Hinode mission shown in green; and ultraviolet light detected by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) on NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) shown in red.

These energetic outbursts from the sun can impact Earth’s satellite-based communications.

The sunspot regions shown in the images are a study in contrast. Bright hot plasma flows upward on the sun’s surface, while darker, cooler plasma flows down. In the chromosphere, the atmospheric layer above the surface, threadlike structures reveal the presence of magnetic fields.

Fine, detailed structures, including glowing dots that exist where the magnetic field is the strongest, can be seen in the dark sunspots. Bright strands derived from the magnetic field called penumbral filaments, which transport heat, surround the sunspot.

Another image shows a sunspot that has lost the majority of its brighter, surrounding region, or penumbra, which seems to be decaying. Researchers believe the remaining fragments could be the end point in the evolution of a sunspot, before it disappears.

The Inouye Solar Telescope also glimpsed “light bridges,” bright solar features that span the darkest region of a sunspot. These complex structures can differ in appearance, but scientists think light bridges could signal that a sunspot is about to decay. Future observations could provide more data about the formation of light bridges and their significance.

The images taken over the past year were among some of the first observations using the world’s largest and most powerful ground-based solar telescope during its commissioning phase, according to the National Science Foundation. Currently, the telescope is being brought up to its full operational capabilities, according to the agency.

Scientists hope the telescope’s capabilities will allow them to answer key questions about the sun, including the origin of solar storms, as well as unlock the complexities of its magnetic field.

The telescope was designed to make ongoing measurements of the magnetic fields in the sun’s corona and provide images of the solar atmosphere like never before. Compared with other observatories’ imaging capabilities, Inouye can capture solar features three times smaller.

Solar data from the Inouye Solar Telescope, as well as two space-based missions called Solar Orbiter and the Parker Solar Probe, can help unravel some of the sun’s enduring mysteries — all while providing stunning views of our star in a new light.

Audio leaks commission objects to SC bench hearing audio leaks case

Supreme Court
The Justice Isa-led judicial commission probing audio leaks raised objections on Wednesday over the larger bench hearing petitions against the formation of the commission, and maintained that it was "not appropriate" for the bench to hear the petitions.

The government on May 20 formed a commission - led by Supreme Court puisne judge Justice Qazi Faez Isa, comprising Balochistan High Court (BHC) Chief Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan and Islamabad High Court (IHC) Chief Justice Aamer Farooq - to probe into the genuineness of some audio leaks concerning serving and former members of the judiciary and their impact on the independence of the judiciary.

A number of petitioners including former prime minister Imran Khan challenged the formation of the commission. Later, a five-judge Supreme Court bench led by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial, and comprising Justice Ijazul Ahsan, Justice Munib Akhtar, Justice Syed Hasan Azhar Rizvi and Justice Shahid Waheed, suspended the probe panel’s proceedings while hearing the petitions.

In a concise statement responding to a petition, the commission maintained that “it would not be appropriate for this bench to hear these petitions”.

“The oath taken by the Chief Justices and Judges of the Supreme Court and High Courts require them to act, ‘in accordance with the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and the law’,” it detailed.

The statement said that the judges were required to “abide by the code of conduct issued by the Supreme Court Judicial Council” and not allow their “personal interest to influence their ‘official conduct’ or ‘official decisions’”.

Quoting the code of conduct requirements, it continued that a judge “must decline resolutely to act in a case involving his own interest, including those of persons whom he regards and treats as near relatives or close friends”.

Moreover, “a Judge must refuse to deal with any case in which he has a connection with one party or its lawyer more than the other, or even with both parties and their lawyers”.

“To ensure that justice is not only done, but is also seen to be done, a Judge must avoid all possibility of his opinion or action in any case being swayed by any consideration of personal advantage, either direct or indirect.”

The commission’s concise statement said that one of the audio recordings “allegedly pertains to the mother-in-law of the Hon’ble Chief Justice”, while Justice Munib Akhtar “may also be mentioned in the said recording”.

It further said that “in another audio recording reference is made to case fixation before a particular bench” headed by Justice Ijazul Ahsan.

The statement also argued that “members of the Commission are bound to act in accordance with the law”, adding that the Constitution, law and the code of conduct must also be observed by the members of the commission.

9 people wounded in shooting at Florida beach in US

9 people wounded in shooting at Florida beach in US
Nine people were injured when gunfire erupted along a beachside promenade in Hollywood, Florida, sending people frantically running for cover along the crowded beach during the Memorial Day holiday in the United States.

According to international media reports, everal of those wounded on Monday evening were taken to a children’s hospital, police spokesperson Deanna Bettineschi said.

Bettineschi said four minors – aged between one and 17 – were hit, along with five adults between 25 and 65. One was in surgery late on Monday night while the others were stable, she said.

The shooting happened shortly before 7pm (23:00 GMT) when a fight broke out and at least one gun was pulled and shots were fired, Bettineschi said. At least one person was in custody, but police were looking for more suspects.

Police chief Chris O’Brien said thousands of people were in the area and dozens of police officers responded, including some who were nearby.

“It’s unfortunate we have law-abiding citizens who come to our beaches and that gets interrupted by a group of criminals,” he said.

Videos posted on Twitter showed emergency medical crews responding and providing aid to injured people.

Know how to remove giant ads on your Favorite websites

how to remove giant ads on your Favorite websites
In ancient times (i.e. the early 2000s) scammy websites would automatically open multiple windows with ads, which you then had to close one by one. It was obnoxious, which is why now every major browser stops sites from opening new windows by default.

But websites found a workaround to show you ads or get you to sign to their newsletter: the overlay.

You’ve surely seen them, even if you never had a word for it before. Overlays cover up what you’re trying to read, watch, or access, generally asking you for an email address or some other piece of personal information. Most times their purpose is relatively harmless, but sometimes these boxes have dark patterns: deliberately confusing design that manipulates users to collect their personal information.

Fortunately, you can remove overlays by editing the HTML code of a webpage. You can do this manually in your browser if you want, but it’s a lot easier to use an extension especially designed for the job.

The single-click option: BehindTheOverlay

BehindTheOverlay is free and works on Firefox and Google Chrome, which should also allow Edge and Opera users to download and install it. The extension is extremely easy to use: just click its icon whenever you see an overlay and it should disappear.

If you prefer, you can also use the app’s keyboard shortcut to trigger the extension: Ctrl + Shift + X on Windows, or Cmd + Shift + X on MacOS. If you’re a Chrome user, you can ditch the default key combo and set up your own. Head over to the extension settings page by clicking on the puzzle piece icon in the top right corner of the interface and choosing Manage extensions, or by typing Chrome://Extensions into the address bar. Click the three-line menu in the top-left corner of the screen and in the emerging sidebar, choose Keyboard shortcuts. Find the BehindTheOverlay extension and click the pen icon under it to edit the shortcut.

This is a minimalistic tool but this level of simplicity has its downsides. There’s no way to automatically remove overlays, and if the extension doesn’t work on a particular site there’s not a lot you can do. Still, BehindTheOverlay works in most cases, which is why it’s worth trying out first.

The automated but finicky option: PopUpOff

PopUpOff is also free and works on Chrome, Edge, Opera, and Firefox. It requires more configuration than BehindTheOverlay, but rewards you by automatically disabling these obnoxious layers. This extension also allows you to set a default approach for every website you visit: Aggressive, Moderate, or Dormant.

The Aggressive mode will remove basically anything that follows you as you scroll. In some cases, this could even remove page elements such as headers, which is why there’s also a Moderate option. This is the extension’s default and tries to only remove the annoying layovers. Finally, there’s Dormant mode, which does nothing and it’s useful when the extension seems to be breaking the website you’re looking at.

PopUpOff is certainly the kind of tool you’ll need to spend some time tweaking, but once you’re done overlays will be a thing of the past and you won’t even think about them anymore.

Reading mode or Postlight Reader
Most modern browsers have some sort of reader mode: Firefox, for example, offers Reader View, while Microsoft Edge offers Immersive Reader, and Safari has Reader. This feature extracts the article from whatever website you’re looking at, allowing you to read without seeing any advertisements, sidebars, or other distractions. That includes overlays, meaning that reader modes are an overall great tool for avoiding them.

Google, an advertising company, does not offer a reader mode in Chrome—at least, not without doing some digging through hidden settings. If you use the Big G’s browser, the Postlight Reader extension can add a reader mode to Chrome and even allow you to configure the font and text size of the article you’re reading.

Accountability court returns reference against Abbasi to NAB

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi
An accountability court (AC) in Karachi on Tuesday sent the reference filed against former prime minister and PML-N leader Shahid Khaqan Abbasi back to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

Four people, including Abbasi, had been nominated in the reference filed in 2020 in connection with alleged illegal hiring in the Pakistan State Oil (PSO).

On the last hearing, the court had reserved its verdict on sending the reference back to the NAB.

Besides former prime minister, other accused in the case were former PSO MD Sheikh Imranul Haq, Sattar Yaqub and former federal secretary Arshad Mirza.

Sheikh Imran had filed a petition in the court for sending the case back to the bureau.

Counsels for the accused had argued before the court that it was not authorized to hear the case following amendments in the NAB ordinance.

Later talking to media, Abbasi said whether the NAB officials would be held accountable for filing a ‘fake’ case against him. “At least the anti-corruption watchdog can apologize to me,” he said, adding, “This is a challenge for the bureau chairman to discourage the practice of filing fake cases.”

Imran Khan serves Rs10 billion notice to Qadir Patel

Imran Khan serves Rs10 billion notice to Qadir Patel
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan served a defamation notice on Tuesday to Federal Health Minister Abdul Qadir Patel after the latter disclosed that "traces of alcohol and cocaine were found in the former premier’s urine analysis".

The legal notice, filed under the Defamation Ordinance, 2002, was served on account of the “dissemination and circulation of wrongful, baseless, false, misleading, erroneous, malicious and defamatory information” against Imran during the minister’s press conference on May 26.

It claimed that through the press conference, the minister “dishonestly…alleged” that Imran’s medical tests showed traces of alcohol and cocaine in his urine sample and that the former premier’s “mental stability” was “questionable” in addition to “some appropriate gesture”.

The notice questioned how “alcohol and cocaine consumption can be traced through a urine test”.

It continued that the medical report “failed to mention” that Imran “incurred head injury on the day of his illegal arrest”, and that “there are no details of a full trauma examination”.

“The report emphasises a lot on mental state of our client [Imran Khan]; however, no details of mental state examination have been provided,” it stated.

According to the notice the health minister’s remarks were made “knowingly, consciously, willingly, deliberately and maliciously which is highly irrational and negates the principles of ethics and morals”. It further added that the comments were “also in violation of the standards and ethics which members of [the] Federal Cabinet must possess and display”.

It maintained that Patel was “responsible and liable for the defamatory circulation and dissemination” which caused “a loss” to the PTI chief’s “goodwill, injury to his reputation and adversely affected his honour”.

“Likewise, you have also caused emotional trauma, mental agony, anguish and distress to our client”.

The notice demanded that Patel “retract” his statements in the same “mode and manner” in which they were made, and “tender an unconditional apology and admit” that he “misstated”.

It further called the minister to pay “Rs 10 billion for defaming…and levelling false allegations” against Imran, adding that the money would be “donated to Shaukat Khanam Memorial Cancer Hospital”.

And lastly, it asked Patel to “refrain from repeating and making further defamatory comments”.

The notice warned that if the demands were not fulfilled within 15 days, Imran would be “compelled to institute legal proceedings”.

Top Foods for Heat Wave Refreshment

Best foods for refreshment on a hot day
Summer is quickly approaching, bringing scorching temperatures and an increased risk of dehydration along with it. Though it’s common knowledge that consuming more fluids on hot days is a good idea, there are also many foods you can consume that can help replenish fluid loss from sweating and prevent dehydration.

This article explores the best foods for refreshment on a hot day.

What is dehydration?
Dehydration occurs when you lose more fluid from your body usually as sweat than you are drinking, resulting in a fluid deficit. Without enough fluid, the body has difficulty performing its usual daily functions which can result in severe health problems if left untreated. The signs and symptoms of dehydration to look out for include:

Dry mouth
Extreme thirst
Less frequent urination
Dark-colored urine
Fatigue and weakness
Dizziness
Confusion
Muscle cramps
Low blood pressure

Why does heat cause dehydration?
The main reason you are at higher risk of becoming dehydrated in the summer months is related to excessive sweating. Sweating is the body’s way of compensating for elevated temperatures, but it can quickly become extreme, especially in very hot climates.

When you lose a lot of fluid as sweat, it needs to be replenished, and this often does not occur as quickly as the body needs it, resulting in signs of dehydration.

The most obvious answer to this issue is to consume large amounts of water on hot days, but there are also foods to consider that will help you restore lost fluid from sweating.

Top 4 foods to stay hydrated
Here is a list of foods that will help you survive the heat waves this summer.

1. Watermelon
Just as its name implies, watermelon is composed of over 90% water, making it a great food choice for hot days. And the benefits of this fruit don’t stop there. Watermelon is loaded with antioxidants and vitamins that help boost your overall health while helping prevent dehydration. One of the best parts about this food choice during the summer months is that it goes great with other foods on the summer barbecue menu.

2. Strawberries
Fruits are a food group containing some of the highest water contents out there, so it is no surprise that strawberries are another great source of fluid replenishment on hot days. Small but mighty, these little fruits are made of over 90% water, helping boost any fluid loss you may have experienced from the heat.

Cold and refreshing, eating strawberries offers a great way to rejuvenate after being outside in the heat. And if you’re looking for a different way to eat them, try mixing them up in a nice cold smoothie that’s sure to be refreshing as an afternoon snack on a hot summer day.

3. Coconut water
If the thought of drinking plain water bores you, think about switching it up with some coconut water. This drink is 95% water but also contains many electrolytes which can help replenish those that were lost in your sweat. An added benefit of coconut water is that it is more flavorful than plain old tap water, making it more enjoyable to drink. And if it’s more enjoyable to consume, you’re likely to drink more of it, which helps with the prevention of dehydration.

4. Cucumbers
Cucumbers are another food option that is high in water content at just about 95% of its composition. Beyond that, this vegetable also contains a lot of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds. It’s easy to feel good about consuming food that can not only help prevent dehydration but may also help prevent some effects of aging.

Foods to avoid during heat waves
Consuming foods that have a high water content is a must on hot days, but what foods should be avoided? Basically, you want to try to avoid eating or drinking anything that has diuretic effects, meaning they cause you to urinate more frequently. Consuming these kinds of foods will increase the amount of fluid lost as urine, which worsens the dehydration already experienced from excessive sweating.

Foods and drinks with diuretic effects that should be avoided include:

Coffee or other caffeinated beverages
Tea
Sugary drinks and sodas
Asparagus
Artichokes
So, while you’re enjoying those backyard barbecues and all the other fun summer activities, be sure to be mindful of the fluid and foods you are consuming. Drink plenty of water and try to consume foods that have a high water content to help replenish lost fluids.

Punjab polls: SC adjourns hearing indefinitely after AGP informs of new law

Supreme court
The Supreme Court has indefinitely put off the hearing on the Election Commission of Pakistan's (ECP) plea against its order of holding Punjab's polls on May 14 after the apex court was informed that a law for the review of suo motu judgements had come into force.

A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial comprising Justice Ijaz Ul Ahsan and Justice Munib Akhtar heard the case.

Attorney General for Pakistan (AGP) Mansoor Usman Awan appeared before the court and said that after the president’s assent, the Supreme Court (Review of Judgements and Orders) Bill 2023, had become a law.

The statement of objects and reasons of the bill, “it is necessary to ensure the fundamental right to justice by providing for meaningful review of judgments and orders passed by Supreme Court of Pakistan in exercise of its original jurisdiction under Article 184”.

The AGP raised objections to the three-judge panel hearing the case and said that the review could only be heard by a larger bench.

During the last hearing, the SC said that the ECP had to be assertive and asked explanation from the federal government for not providing funds and security for the general elections in Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.

The chief justice said the Commission has an overarching duty to hold free and fair elections.

He asked the ECP counsel Sajeel Shehryar Swati, that the ECP must not have allowed the ipsi dixit to influence the commission regarding the holding of elections in that province.

Swati argued that the ECP conducts the elections by using the machinery of the federal and provincial governments. He said the Commission, on 22nd March, after the briefing of intelligence agencies and police kept in mind that there is political polarisation, which culminated on May 9.

On April 4, SC underlined that ECP’s decision to postpone polls in Punjab till October 8 was unconstitutional.

The court ruled that the Constitution and law did not allow the ECP to postpone the elections, ordering that the elections in Punjab be held on May 14 instead of April 30.

The apex court directed the caretaker government in Punjab to assist the ECP with elections next month and said the federal government has been asked to assist the commission, ordering authorities to release Rs21 billion to the ECP by April 10.

However, the government claimed that it lacked the funds and manpower in view of worsening security situation in the country. Subsequently, the ECP filed a petition earlier in May and urged SC to revisit its verdict. The Punjab elections were not held on May 14.

40 dead in India's Manipur clashes with troops

India's Manipur clashes
New Delhi has deployed security forces to Manipur to try and put down ethnic unrest that began earlier this month. Dozens of rebel fighters have been killed in clashes with security forces in India’s remote northeastern state of Manipur.

The state has been on edge since the explosion of inter-ethnic violence on May 3 between tribal groups and the ethnic majority Meitei people over plans to extend economic quotas to the Meitei.

Dozens were killed in the unrest and thousands were displaced.

On Sunday, Chief Minister N Biren Singh told reporters at least 40 fighters had been killed in a crackdown by security forces.

Two police had also been killed in the past two days of unrest, he added.

“The terrorists have been using M-16 and AK-47 assault rifles and sniper guns against civilians. They came to many villages to burn down homes,” local media quoted Singh as saying.

“We have started taking very strong action against them with the help of the army and other security forces. We have got reports that some 40 terrorists have been shot dead,” Singh was quoted as saying.

The far-flung states of northeast India – sandwiched between Bangladesh, China and Myanmar – have long been a tinderbox of tensions between different ethnic groups.

New Delhi rushed thousands of paramilitary and army troops to the state of 3.2 million people. It imposed a curfew after fighting erupted between the majority Meitei, who are mostly Hindus and live in and around the state capital Imphal, and the mainly Christian Kuki tribe from the surrounding hills.

Mobile internet in the area has been cut for weeks.

Most victims are believed to be from the Kuki community, with some of their villages and churches destroyed by Meitei mobs. But the Meitei were also targeted by the Kukis in some places.

The initial event leading to the clashes was Kuki anger at the prospect of the Meitei being given guaranteed quotas of government jobs and other perks in a form of affirmative action.

This also stoked long-held fears among the Kuki that the Meitei might also be allowed to acquire land in areas currently reserved for them and other tribal groups.

Dar vows to promote Islamic finance system in country

Mali: Protesters demand exit of UN peacekeeping force

Mali: Protesters demand exit of UN peacekeeping force
Several thousand demonstrators gathered in the Mali’s capital Bamako, demanding an end to a United Nations peacekeeping mission that they say has failed to bring peace.

According to international media reports, demonstrators held signs calling for the UN mission known as MUNISMA (United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in Mali) to leave the country.

The M5-RFP, the party of the transitional Prime Minister Choguel Maiga and civil society organisations supporting the transitional military government, organised the rally held at the Palais des Sports arena.

“It’s an evil force that needs to leave our land. It’s been of no use; it has failed to deliver. Give us a few weeks and we will drive them out of the country,” demonstrator Abdoulaye Diarra told reporters.

Thousands of people have been killed in attacks by armed groups linked to ISIL (ISIS) and al-Qaeda since 2013.

MINUSMA was established that year to support foreign and local troops battling the armed groups. With more than 14,000 troops on the ground, the UN mission in Mali is the biggest, costliest, and deadliest operation in the organisation’s history.

As per reports, more than 300 UN peacekeepers have also been killed.

Malians initially celebrated the arrival of the UN peacekeeping force, but now say UN soldiers are the problem and not the solution. They blame it for failing to protect the population and not intervening when massacres were carried out near UN compounds.

Medical report declares Imran Khan alcoholic, drug abuser, rules out leg fracture: Health Minister

Health Minister Abdul Qadir Patel
Health Minister Abdul Qadir Patel Friday, citing details of former prime minister Imran Khan's medical report, said it indicated excessive alcohol consumption, no information about a fracture on his leg, and unstable mental health.

Patel was informing media persons in Karachi about the former prime minister's medical report after he underwent an examination at PIMS hospital following his arrest on May 9.

At the outset of the press conference, the health minister, before sharing the details of the report, said that it was a "public document".

He said that the report does not have any details about the fracture on his foot, which Khan claimed he sustained following the November 3 assassination bid.

"He [Imran Khan] had a plaster on his foot for about five to six months, however, the medical report did not indicate any fracture," he added.

The minister said that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief's urine sample was also taken. He said that the initial report shows the presence of toxic elements and the excessive usage of alcohol and cocaine.

He said that the report also mentioned about Khan's mental health, according to which, his actions and body language are "not those of a fit man".

"The report stated that a person with stable mental health does not make these kinds of gestures," he said.

"I also used to say that Imran Khan's mental condition is not well," said Patel, adding that the PTI chief has ended decency in politics, political tolerance and respect for others.

Patel further said what Khan says differs from his medical report. "Imran Khan's report did not indicate any fracture, but [consumption of] powder," he continued to say.

The health minister said that once the detailed report comes, it will be sent to the police. "Whatever Khan is doing can only be done by an agent or a madman," he said.

“A five-member panel of senior doctors is saying that his mental stability is questionable,” said Patel.

Speaking about the May 9 events, the minister said they hadn't seen such situations since 1971. "We also had differences but we stood with the army when times were tough."

Japan imposes new sanctions on Russia over Ukraine invasion

Japenese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida
Japan announced fresh sanctions against Russia on Friday over its invasion of Ukraine, targeting its military as well as the construction and engineering sectors.

Russia was hit with a wave of sanctions after it sent forces into Ukraine in February last year, but calls have grown from Kyiv and its allies for tougher action against Moscow.

The latest embargo by Tokyo follows the Group of Seven summit Japan hosted last week in Hiroshima, where the bloc’s leaders agreed to “starve Russia of G7 technology, industrial equipment and services that support its war machine.”

The new Japanese sanctions include “an asset freeze of Russian individuals and groups, a ban on the export of goods to Russia’s military-related organizations, and a ban on the export of construction and engineering services to Russia,” top government spokesman Hirokazu Matsuno told reporters.

The asset freeze targets 17 individuals and 78 groups, including high-level military officials, while the 80 organizations hit with export restrictions include the Russian mobile phone operator MegaFon, according to the Japanese government.

The United States, Britain and the European Union have all announced fresh punishments against Moscow recently, as well as commitments of more military aid to Ukraine, including F-16 fighters. Matsuno also condemned plans to deploy Russian tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus.

Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko said Thursday that Moscow had begun moving nukes to its territory. Matsuno said this will “further escalate the situation.
“As the only country to have suffered atomic bombings during wartime, Japan can never tolerate Russia’s threat of nuclear weapons, not to mention their use.”

Asia Cup 2023: ACC accepts PCB's hybrid model

Asia Cup 2023: ACC accepts PCB's hybrid model
The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) is said to have endorsed Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) hybrid plan for hosting the Asia Cup in September.

Pakistan will host four to six Asia Cup matches, according to the hybrid model given to the ACC by PCB Management Committee Chairman Najam Sethi. Simultaneously, India will play its matches in a neutral venue that will also host other matches.

According to sources, the Asian body has accepted in principle the hybrid model offered by Najam Sethi, with no additional requirements.

According to this hybrid model, Pakistan will host four to six matches, with the other matches taking place in neutral venues such as Sri Lanka or the United Arab Emirates.

“However, all of the details will be finalised at the ACC meeting, which will be held soon,” the insider stated.

The 2019 Asia Cup and Pakistan’s participation in the Men’s ODI World Cup have been jeopardised as the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) refused to tour Pakistan for the aforementioned competition on political concerns.

The BCCI maintained its stance of not traveling Pakistan for the Asia Cup, while the PCB was emphatic that if they did not, Pakistan would miss out on the World Cup in India in October-November.

Imran Khan challenged Article 245 in Supreme Court

Imran khan
Imran Khan has decided to approach the Supreme Court against the attempt to dissolve the party and to force the leaders to leave the party. Chairman PTI filed a petition in the Supreme Court through Hamid Khan. The position has been taken in the petition that the summoning of the army under the undeclared martial law and Article 245 has been requested to be annulled.

The petition states that the trial and arrests of civilians in military courts should be stopped, the workers and leaders arrested under the MPO should be ordered to be released, efforts to dissolve Tehreek-e-Insaf should be annulled. A judicial commission should be formed to investigate the incident of May 9.

It has been said in the petition that the attempt to abolish the party is a violation of the constitution, forcing party leaders and workers to separate from the party is against the law. The Supreme Court has issued important decisions in this regard in the past. Arrests are being made without trial by raids, Corps Commander House Lahore is actually Jinnah House and legally a civilian building, there is a law against the trial of Jinnah House attack suspects in military courts. Attempts are being made to destroy Tehreek-e-Insaaf through fear and arrests.

Federal Govt, Nawaz Sharif, Shehbaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz, Asif Zardari, Bilawal Bhutto, Maulana Fazlur Rehman along with caretaker Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi, Azam Khan have been made parties in the petition. The stand has been taken in the petition that this whole drama is created by Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz. Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz propagated that Imran Khan wants to bring his army chief. Imran Khan always respected the institutions and stood by them.

Court rejects interim bail plea of Pervaiz Elahi in corruption case

Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi
An Anti-Corruption Court in Lahore rejected the interim bail of former Punjab chief minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi in an alleged corruption case.

At the outset of the hearing, the public prosecutor argued that the medical certificate submitted by Pervaiz Elahi’s counsel in court is fake.

The court dismissed the interim bail plea on the ground of non-compliance and also rejected the PTI leaders’ request for a day attendance waiver.

It may be recalled that Mr Elahi had obtained protective bail from the Lahore High Court in two cases – one filed by the Punjab Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) and the other linked to terrorism.

On April 28, the anti-corruption establishment (ACE) team along with police contingents raided former Punjab Chief Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) President Pervaiz Elahi’s house in Lahore.

It was learnt that 25 persons including a woman were arrested by ACE during the raid. However, Pervaiz Elahi was not arrested in the raid.

The eight-hour-long police action came to a halt after the Director General of Punjab’s Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE), Sohail Zafar Chattha, left the scene along with the police contingent.

8 tips to minimize social media harm by US surgeon

US surgeon Vivek Murthy
The US surgeon general is calling for tech companies and lawmakers to take “immediate action” to protect kids' and adolescents' mental health on social media.

But after years of insufficient action by both social media platforms and policymakers, parents and young people still bear most of the burden in navigating the fast-changing, often a harmful world of secretive algorithms, addictive apps and extreme and inappropriate content found on platforms such as Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat.

So what can parents and young people do now? Surgeon General Vivek Murthy has some tips.

“Our children and adolescents don’t have the luxury of waiting years until we know the full extent of social media’s impact,” Murthy said in an advisory released Tuesday. “Their childhoods and development are happening now."

Tips for young people

1) Reach out for help: If you or someone you know is being negatively affected by social media, reach out to a trusted friend or adult for help.

2) Create boundaries: Limit the use of phones, tablets, and computers for at least one hour before bedtime and through the night to make sure you get enough sleep. Keep mealtimes and in-person gatherings device‑free to help build social bonds and engage in two‑way conversations with others. Connect with people in person and make unplugged interactions a daily priority.

3) Be cautious about what you share: Personal information about you has value. Be selective with what you post and share online and with whom, as it is often public and can be stored permanently. If you aren’t sure if you should post something, it’s usually best if you don’t.

4) Don’t keep harassment or abuse a secret: Reach out to at least one person you trust, such as a close friend, family member, counsellor, or teacher, who can give you the help and support you deserve. Visit stopbullying.gov for tips on how to report cyberbullying. If you have experienced online harassment and abuse by a dating partner, contact an expert at Love is Respect for support. If your private images have been taken and shared online without your permission, visit Take It Down to help get them removed.

Tips for parents and caregivers

1) Create a family media plan: Agreed-upon expectations can help establish healthy technology boundaries at home – including social media use. A family media plan can promote open family discussion and rules about media use and include topics such as balancing screen/online time, content boundaries, and not disclosing personal information

2) Create tech-free zones: Restrict the use of electronics at least one hour before bedtime and through the night. Keep meal times and other in-person gatherings tech-free. Help children develop social skills and nurture their in‑person relationships by encouraging unstructured and offline connections with others.

3) Model responsible behaviour: Parents can set a good example of what responsible and healthy social media use looks like by limiting their own use, being mindful of social media habits (including when and how parents share information or content about their child), and modelling positive behaviour on your social media accounts.

4) Empower kids: Teach kids about technology and empower them to be responsible online participants at the appropriate age. Discuss with children the benefits and risks of social media as well as the importance of respecting privacy and protecting personal information in age-appropriate ways. Have conversations with children about who they are connecting with, their privacy settings, their online experiences, and how they are spending their time online.

Pakistan ‘will absolutely not default’, asserts Dar

Finance Minister Ishaq Dar
Finance Minister Ishaq Dar on Wednesday asserted that the country was not on the verge of a financial crisis and “will absolutely not default”.

Dar’s remarks comes amid growing fears of default, propelled by the country’s declining remittances and foreign exchange reserves, as well as a prolonged delay in reaching an accord with the International Monetary Fund for the release of a $1.1 billion tranche out of a $6.5bn loan package.

Addressing the fears during a gathering at the Federal Board of Revenue in Islamabad, the finance minister commended his economic team for its “efforts and hard work”, pointing out that the country had recorded a current account surplus for the months of March and April at $750 million and $18m, respectively.

Regarding the ongoing negotiations with the IMF for release of the long-awaited bailout tranche, Dar said his team had completed all the technical work and prior actions required for the completion of the ninth review.

He stressed that there was a “sincere effort” on his and his team’s part to complete the IMF’s ongoing programme and said they delay was “unfortunate”.

The review should have been completed earlier, he added.

Dar said the country had repaid $5.5 billion of its commercial loans. Of those, he said China had rolled over $2bn once it “understood” that Pakistan had completed its requirements for the release of funds by the IMF.

Regarding the rest of the $3.5bn from non-Chinese commercial banks, Dar said: “We are expecting that a substantial part of that [loan] facility will be returned once the [IMF] staff level agreement or board meeting is completed because it is always renewed and they (banks) are always there to do business.”

Delay in IMF accord

A staff-level accord to release a $1.1bn tranche out of a $6.5bn IMF package has been delayed since November, with over 100 days gone since the last staff-level mission to Pakistan. That is the longest such gap since at least 2008.

The international money lender said earlier this month that Pakistan needed significant additional financing for a successful completion of the long-stalled ninth review of the IMF’s bailout package.

Obtaining commitments of “significant additional financing” is essential before the IMF approved the release of pending bailout funds that are crucial for the country to resolve an acute balance of payments crisis, it added.

So far, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and China have come to Pakistan’s assistance in March and April with pledges that would cover some of the funding deficit.

World failing to protect civilians caught in conflict: UN chief

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres
The world is failing to protect civilians as the death toll of people caught up in conflicts surged more than 50 percent from the previous year, the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told the Security Council “to live up to its commitments” to protect civilians as enshrined in international humanitarian law, citing examples of civilian deaths in Ukraine and Sudan, schools destroyed in Ethiopia, and damage to water infrastructure in Syria.

In 2022, the UN said there was a 53 percent increase in civilian deaths compared with 2021, with nearly 17,000 civilian deaths recorded across 12 conflicts.

Guterres said UN research into war zones showed 94 percent of victims from “explosive weapons” in populated areas were civilians last year, while more than 117 million people faced acute hunger primarily because of war and insecurity.

“Law overlooked is law undermined. We need action and accountability to ensure it is respected. And that depends on political will,” said Guterres, sitting next to Russian Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya. “Peace is the best form of protection.”

Worldwide, the number of refugees forced from their homes because of “conflict, violence, human rights violations and persecution” has reached 100 million, the UN boss added.

Govt considering to ban PTI: Khawaja Asif

Khawaja Asif
Government is considering banning former prime minister Imran Khan’s political party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said on Wednesday.

Addressing a news conference in Islamabad, he said the parliament will also be taken into confidence if the government arrives at a final decision.

The Defence Minister said those parting ways with the PTI themselves are disclosing that May 9 violent acts were pre planned. He said there is no precedence of the acts that took place on the 9th May as these amounted to challenging the state.

Khawaja Asif said the armed forces have legitimate reservations on the violent attacks on military installations and the memorials. He said every step will be taken to ensure that the armed forces are not targeted by anybody for political purposes in future.

When asked about whether there is any pressure on the government to send Imran Khan in exile, the Defence Minister said it is our internal issue and there is no pressure from any quarter.

Situation in Pakistan is being monitored by US; State Department

US Department of State

Railway Stations to receive solar panels soon

Solar Panel
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced, a comprehensive strategy has been established to develop Pakistan’s Railways on modern lines, under which solar panels of international standards will be installed at seven railway stations to save electricity.

As per the announcement, it has been decided that the solar panels will be installed at 45 railway stations and offices of main cities including Peshawar, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Karachi, Multan, and Sukkur divisions with a budget of Rs 40 million.

According to the sources, in the first phase, the Pakistan railway has selected three points in Peshawar, five in Rawalpindi divisions, 20 in Lahore division, four in Multan division, five in Sukkur division, three in Quetta division, and five in Karachi division.

The sources reported that, after the successful completion of this initiative, solar panels will be installed at other railway stations in the country.

However, the excess electricity generated by these solar panels will be sent to the main grid station of the Water and Electricity Development Authority.

Indeed, solar panels will give more real-world potential for railway lines. The initiative has been taken to use alternative energy sources to produce and save electricity.

Previously, the announcement was made in 2023, the PR railway director Nazia Jabeen stated that the cost of the project would be around Pakistani Rs 450 million. Pakistan currently has a capacity of just under 2 GW, and has a target of 12.8 GW by 2030, as per the figures released by National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA).

In addition, she elaborate that LED lights along with the solar energy system would be installed which would also save Rs 28.92 million per year.

Moreover, the project capacity has been estimated at 2308 kilowatts and 3.2 million units per annum with 20 percent efficiency to be produced in a year.

In contrast, after the completion of the project, railway stations would be able to save around Rs 52 million annually which is decided to spend on fuel and maintenance of diesel generators.

As per the officials, Pakistan Railway would save Rs 70.62 million per year due to the tariff difference between WAPDA and solar electricity costs. Pakistan railway has a total complete route length of just over 11,000 Km.

If we talk about the neighborhood country India, the government has used the massive railway system to push rooftop solar. That ensures that all railways are solarised and helps the government to save energy at a massive level.

Indeed, solar panels are the best energy source to utilize perfectly. As Pakistan is constantly facing an energy crisis and it has been difficult for the government to cope with or control the energy crisis.

Not only at the industrial level but it is facing the issues at residential level also. Solar panel installation helps in maintaining electricity and saving power which will help government to balance the power at all levels.

Solar panels are easily available and now different companies are offering different packages to provide ease to their customers in terms of installation. As it yeh the best natural source to generate electricity.
